202127 2003-12-22 10:25:00 hi all and yes i have said this before on someone else's thread but its got worse,
every day a little bit worse.

since the xtra spam filter thing took effect, my spam amount has gone up considerably, not over the top just pain in the neck like,

getting around the 30 + mark most days, multiple at a go and all advertising same junk just different from names, is it likely to be just general spam or a address book gone wild from someone else's comp? as they seem to have very nice normal names and addys?

i have not altered or added, my details into any other new sites or other worrying spots for harvesting, so was wondering if others had increase's?

what other methods do they use to detect addy's?
random? computer generated? harvesting off sites?

mine is actually filtered three times, once by clear, then forwarded to my xtra addy, then mailwasher gets them last, all addys are forwarded to one addy into mailwasher, much better option.

just more blacklisted and deleted stuff, not bounced.

anyone?

202128 2003-12-22 10:43:00 I have a "wildcarded" domain name.

That means any and all emails ending with "@{my_domain_name}.co.nz are valid.

That should make me an easy target, as no guessing is needed. My main e-mail address is posted on several websites (a requirement, not by choice) yet I receive only about 1 spam email per month to that address.

I have another orcon.net.nz email address, that I use for instances of having to register things over the web. That gets several spams per week, perhaps 5.

As a "control" I have a yahoo.com.au address that I almost never use, that gets zero.

Plainly some sites that people have left their address on are a plague. But which ones?

And I really don't want plumper lips, or feel a pressing need to correspond with "interesting" sounding ladies of dubious moral standards.

202129 2003-12-22 10:54:00 so i should learn to live with it????

mailwasher has its use's, but cannot put on auto delete in case it deletes the wrong thing . . . . and i lose business . . . .

but i hate the junk, and i dont need enlargements of any kind or to tell my wife i need this??? or ill love this?
and i dont beleive bouncing gains anything, but more junk in the long run .

but the normality of the names gets me, usually it was from numbers / letters now its someones name . . . . .

i dont bother with checking where they come from or even to read them, just delete, which reminds me the trash must be rather full lately . . .

:D

thanxs GF .

202130 2003-12-22 11:11:00 I just use the Pro version of mailwasher and I'm not with Xtra or Clear.

I have three adresses and was getting a little spam on one email address. My main Email adress is in my profile on PressF1 and have found no increase in spam. I dropped Mailwasher a while back but have reinstalled since as there was an increase. I bounce all spam. Since then I have bought the latest version of Office and use Outlook as my Email client as I have for some time. The new version is very good for me but realise it may not be for everyone. I still get the odd spam mail and use Mailwasher to blacklist the whole domain name unless I trust the domain.

I have signed up for several newsletters etc including ZDNet, Langalist, Stuff, Silicon Valley and others.

Mailwasher Pro works for me but you have to be careful. I very nearly added my Mother to my blacklist a few days ago.

Why things get worse I have no idea. About two months ago I had all sorts offering to enlarge certain portions of my anatomy which is why I use Mailwasher to check before I download. I just use one ISP with three Email adresses and have done for about the last five months.

lucky mum then huh Elephant?

i have got two addys with xtra, ( 1 work and 1 personal) while also having taken over the old work addy as well, it seems the old addy is the culprit causing all the extra mail.
and when the old addy runs out hopefully so will the spam?
i am careful about who has or gets my email addy's, and dont broadcast them if possible (other than work purposes)

i havent changed any settings or address's for ages, but the spam attack is getting worse, over time, and i have a very large list in the blacklisted section....

patience seems to be the key word for me....something im not good at lately.

202132 2003-12-22 11:24:00 Hi Beetle
You didn't mention which choice you'd made of the 3 Xtra offered: (My words)
(1) Mark as SPAM - then you choose.
(2) Put into a separate folder to analyse.
(3) Delete & don't put into your mailbox.
I was cross with Xtra for coming into the spam-filtering later than I thoight they should. But I can't complain about the service since it started in mid-November.
I chose the 3rd option & have had only 1 piece of spam on my machine since. I sent that back to them as part of their option to report what they'd missed.
Maybe you're getting it because you don't want them to make the choice?
Or maybe Xtra's not making these choices..though you do mention them as part of your system?
I hold no brief for Xtra, but on this subject they are doing the job for me.

202134 2003-12-22 11:32:00 Lucky Mum NO.

Lucky me YES!!!!

Don't use Auto bounce or delete in my humble opinion otherwise I will never talk to you again.

Don't take that seriously please.

Try adding those Emails you want to the friends list instead.

202135 2003-12-22 12:02:00 Elephant, you should know better.

Bouncing spam can cause much grief for network admins, etc, and is only effective if the spammers send their email from a real address that they use.

Anyway, I've got two Orcon emails, and I received one piece of spam about three months ago (first time), haven't had one since. I also have a Yahoo Australia email. It's relatively new, but I received two items of spam (exactly the same) over a few days promoting Macs. Needless to say, I contacted the abuse address of the folks running the service that provided the reply-to address. Haven't seen that spam again, though I should just wait it out.

Another email address I have is with SoftHome (www.softhome.net). They use an interesting technique to help filter spam, called grey listing. When a mail server tries to send mail to the SoftHome servers, it is told that the servers are busy, and to try again in 30 minutes. Automated spam sending software won't wait around for half an hour when there are millions of other addresses and servers waiting, so they move on. Any decent network admin should configure their mail servers to try again if the server reponds as busy, although I have run across a few that don't (MS's Passport service, from memory, and something else).

Finally, I have a Hotmail address which I am slowly fading out of existence. I never received spam to it, until I signed up for various sites.

My trick is to use obscure email addresses (things like logic_decidedly@domain.com - not one of my addresses, but the format is similar, and it's enough to stop dictionary spam runs getting through), and be careful where you enter your address. My Orcon addresses would be easy to get spam using a dictionary, but the rest are rather obscure. So long as I don't give those out to nasty sites, I'm fine.

Well I just use what works for me and it does . Bouncing will of course add to Internet traffic and I realise this .

Possibly we should just have a one world order and one rule of law for all . Spamming will of course be punishable by death ( at least ) .

As far as I see it there will never be a stop to spam unless we just pull the plug on the Internet . Even that won't stop spam . I regularly get flyers from the Warehouse, Dick Smith, Countdown etc etc . . . in my mailbox . Add to that we get adverts on TV . Isn't that spam?

I am really not positive about the defintion of SPAM but have the idea that regarding Email it will be messages that drop into your Inbox offering some service or goods that you never asked for or wanted . This is normally UNSOLICITED . It normally means that some entity has found your Email address by whatever means whether you signed up for something then that firm onsold your Email address .

I have no objection by the way to shopping at The Warehouse, Dick Smiths, Countdown etc the difference here is that I front up to the shop in question and want to spend money to buy an item . This means to me that I solicit for the goods or services offered by the shop or company .

What is the difference between SPAM and Telephone Marketing for example? Telecom put out a phone book don't they? This may well be less private than your Email address . Your Email address won't tell me where you live . This would allow me to phone everyone in the White Pages and offer goods or services but most people don't have unlisted phone numbers .

Well I picked my email address and my ISP and I will deal with SPAM in my way .

I didn't pick the name I was given
