202116 2003-12-22 10:07:00 Bought Myst (Masterpiece Edition) yesterday for my wife (at $10...why not?).
Trouble is that it loads v.e.r.y. s.l.o.w.l.y in some places. Initial loadup is slow and when the game returns to view a book at various parts of it it is like 'go and make a cup of tea while it loads' slow. I'm running Win98SE and my system (Celeron 400 with 320mb ram) has no problems with the minimum requirements. Any old Myst players out there who can recall this problem?

202117 2003-12-22 17:42:00 I never played it myself, but I do know that many games do some ridiculous things loading massive wads of data that might never be used in a given session of play.
Beating the minimum requirements has to be done in style to be sure of decent game play.

Is it just slow in initial loading or is it a problem during play?

202119 2003-12-22 18:58:00 oggy,

I'm an old Myst player :) I don't have the masterpiece edition, but using the updated Win95 edition I've never had problems like that. It probably has something to do with it being the Masterpiece edition (they added lots of stuff to it apparently). The only one I ever had problems with was Riven (Myst 2) on my old PC (I ran that on a Pentium 120), but even then it wasn't drastically slow... just jerky or slow cutscenes really.

202120 2003-12-22 19:28:00 It's not something like a badly fragmented hard disk that it is using to load things into virtual memory is it?
320Mb should eliminate need for that in anything but most demanding games.

202121 2003-12-22 20:07:00 With the original Myst it did all run off the CD. No install at all except a shortcut to your desktop. Is it still like that?
Maybe you could try a virtual cd drive program and run it that way??

202122 2003-12-22 23:30:00 Doesn't seem to be loading data during the delay. No blinking lights indicating CD or Hardthe actual gameplay... it runs fine. It's just in transitioning from the game to 'the book' which takes about 5 minutes I guess.
We're well over the minimum system requirements. Integrated graphics but with a stack of RAM that shouldn't be a problem.
Does seem to load a lot of the program onto HD but still requires the CD to be inserted in the drive to play.
I have noticed a stutter in the sound for about 15 seconds when loading the game...so perhaps a sound conflict?.

202123 2003-12-23 01:09:00 It definitely sounds like slow accress to the CD drive to me. I would try this...

1) Do a full install so it doesnt need to access data off the CD (or rarely). This may not be an option.

2) See if there is a patch or explanation on their web site. Whenever I install a new game I always download the latest patch before I start.

3) So a search on Google for a No Cd patch. This will enable you to trfr the contents of the CD onto your hard drive then run the game without the CD.

4) If you are experiencing problems with several games you may want to look for an update of your CDR/DVD drivers.

202124 2003-12-23 20:49:00 Hmmm. Patches for this problem, there doesn't seem to be one. However from looking at a few sites and putting together a few snippets, what I think the problem could be is that while I have higher than the required version of Direct X, my video may not support it as although I have the latest driver, it is dated 1998 which is probably before Direct X 6 came out.
Video is controlled by STB Velocity 128 (or something like that...can't remember exactly...I'm at work...oops...hope our IT guys aren't checking up on us today).
Can't even use this as an excuse for Santa to bring me a new PC as this game doesn't run properly on Win XP. Ahh crap!

202125 2003-12-23 21:17:00 Runs perfectly on XP,You just need to right click the .exe and instruct it to run in 98 compatabilty mode. metla (154)
