2003-12-20 21:24:00 | I am tyring to run Norton Speeddisk for the first time in ages. I have not been able to run it before because my dirve was nearly full. I now have plenty of space. My problem/question is that it keeps restarting its process. It goes through the Optimising Folders stages, then starts optimising/sorting and gets to about 40% then restarts optimising the folders again. (this takes quite a bit of time) Do I keep going and will it eventually get through this area and past the 40% mark or have I stil got something running in the background that is making it restart. I find that Speedisk's Help provides no answers at all as to the actual process that one will see, and it could be quite disconcerting to a beginner. Thanks Digby I have diables all the apps runiing in my system tray, is there any other steps that I shoudl take befroe running it ?

2003-12-20 22:01:00 | have you run nortons optomistion? try setting a decent size minimum swapfile size. run diskdoctor first. usually speeddisk is fairly good even with background apps running. just let it run. it may be due to it not being used for ages that it will take a while to sort everything out. does it give any error messages? if still no joy you may have to rename the applog.

2003-12-20 22:12:00 | Gee, thanks for that quick informative reply. No I have not run Optimisation (I will do) How big should I make my swap file ? I have plenty of spare hard disk space and 256Meg of Ram. I will also run Disk Doctor. Thanks again Digby PS yes I have not run it for ages due to not being able to, so the drive will probably be a complete mess.

2003-12-20 22:20:00 | >How big should I make my swap file ? all depends on how much you use. set it to the same size as you normally would use and add a little bit more. for starters just set minimum to 100meg or so just help nortons. also speeddisk dosn't run in safe mode, it handles being interrupted a lot better than windows defraq.

2003-12-22 04:06:00 | This problem can also be caused by invalid data generated by taskmon. Instructions to fix the problem can be found here: support.microsoft.com Stopping taskmon from running full stop will not hurt either.

2003-12-22 10:15:00 | Best way is control alt delete every thing except sys tray and explorer. Turn off screensavers, dont touch the mouse, dont do any thing just let it run. Cheers ears tedheath

2003-12-22 22:31:00 | Thanks Ted I had turned off everything using Ctrl Alt, but I had forgotten to turn off my screen saver ! (duh) I will try it again now . Digby What has been frustrating is to watch it keep re-starting its otimising folders operation (which takes a few minutes) and to not know if eventually it will carry on and finish . Hopefully turning the screen saver off should do it .
