202592 2003-12-23 18:51:00 Using the Telecom onlne tester to see if I can get ADSL or not tells me that its not a runner as the speeds I will get are below the Telecom minumum.

Sunsequent enquiry with Telecom elicted the "fact" that

your particular address uses incompatible access technology (eg PCM cable as opposed to copper cable). At this stage, there is no planned date to upgrade this at your address.

On Making futher enquiry I have been told that

1. The line to and into my home is copper

2. the resitance on my line is 763 ohms (which is in range for adsl) according to Juha's article in the online herald 23/12/03.

What is the least expensive way to find out if I can get ADSL at my address with some degree of certainty?

202593 2003-12-23 18:55:00 ring up telecom and then ask them ilikelinux (1418)

202595 2003-12-23 19:58:00 even if that sounded funnny but seriously the best way and probably the only way is to contact telecom or your isp and ask them if adsl is able to be installed and used at a good reasonable speed at your property... csinclair83 (200)
202596 2003-12-23 19:59:00 If you give us your location, perhaps the city and suburb you are in, and if you trust us enough maybe your "street" name or the one next to your street and maybe someone here would be able to tell you the answer you are after csinclair83 (200)
202597 2003-12-23 20:17:00 Looks to me like you have done your homework and enquired with Telecom and further afield and getting conflicting answers . I guess you have entered your phone number on the web page that Telecom provide to check for ADSL (kick me if I am asking a dumb question!) .

I would suggest that the only real way to find out is to have ADSL installed, usually $99 or sometimes free depending on what promotion Telecom are running . I am sure that you could have it done on the basis of it it doesn't work you get your money back .

If someone you know has an ADSL connection they could come around and plug in their router etc to see whether it links up and at what speed . . . or connect to the Jetstream Games realm .

202598 2003-12-23 20:43:00 Thanks Jester,

I had been thinking along the lines that you suggest . Telecom won't entertain a "try before you buy" approach and I can see their point (up to a point) .

I had also thought about getting a friend to come by with their router and see if they can connect from my home, but am under the impression that someone needs to sprinkle pixie dust on my connection at the exchange .

Can anyone tell me if this is the case or not?

Yes, they do, preferably the real magic stuff .

So, essentially, you have been told by Telecom that you cannot get ADSL at a rate that is acceptable, so they wont even try it out just "to see"?

On the other hand you have someone saying that, theorectically, you can get it, but it cannot be tested until Telecom flick the switch (or use the fairy dust) .

You have a stalemate . . . your move .

202600 2003-12-23 20:52:00 Mention Woosh Wireless to them, it might jog some action. Check with your neighbours, if they have it and it runs ok then, chances are you'll be ok.
