202496 2003-12-23 10:51:00 1.how fast are they, how long does it take to burn a 4gig file

-I guess around 20-25 minutes, never clocked my burnings...

2.can i play the dvd-r,dvd+r in a dvd player.
-Works just fine!

3. and is there anything i need or should look out for.
-Quality, bundled software if needed....and look around for reviews before getting one. I use a NEC 1300 and its just OK!

202497 2003-12-23 11:06:00 I think retailers think that other people too, plan to buy DVD writers for Xmas, so they'll keep the current price, maybe even increase it a little?
Therefore, I'm waiting till after Xmas to buy one. I think prices for writer will have gone down then.

202498 2003-12-23 11:57:00 1. At 4x, a DVD would take around 14 or so minutes IIRC

2. No too sure on that, but DVD-R/W is the more commonly supported format.
YMMV, dependant on the speed you burnt your DVD at (Slower is more compatible), the DVD-Rom you're playing it in.. etc etc

3. Look out for multi-format DVD Writers. You can pick them up for little over $230 in places (+gst) so it may pay to hunt around for one of those.
And I agree with Peter, look at the software. You want something that's gonna do the job for you and do it well, so it may even pay to download trials of the software, dependant on if you're going to be doing just data backups, or want to use it to make your own movie. Your requirements will vary.

Hope this helps

202499 2003-12-23 19:56:00 I have a Sony +/- writer... Word of advice to you is to wait a little longer till the new dual layer / dual format writers come onto the market... :)

As for your questions...

1. Burning at 4X takes 17min I think to do a 4gig file.

2. Newer players can play DVD+R, but be sure to check because DVD-R is still the most compatible around. Also, DVD+R might not work in some DVD-Rom drives in your pc.

3. Cost of media and quality. When DVD writers first came onto the market, the media was and still is a bit of a shocker. Look for a Pioneer A06 writer or even the Lite-On dual format writers.

Merry Xmas

202502 2003-12-24 02:57:00 Why not get a LiteOn or Pioneer for the same price? Much better quality IMO.

202503 2003-12-24 04:29:00 if you are getting a dvd writer also get an additional dvd-rom. then copying your own data cds and dvds wont take up a chunk of your harddrive. also you wont wear out your burner playing ROM cds and dvds Megaman (344)

> dvds

With the quality of most of todays Drives (Especially those mentioned by Lo.), this shouldnt really be an issue. I'm willing to be the entire PC will have been upgraded/replaced before the laser/drive dies!
