202296 2003-12-23 00:21:00 before i start, THIS IS NOT AN OFFICAL SURVEY

i was reading this months pcworld and saw in letters about someone wondering why apple wasn't in the readers awards. well there i was wondering, "why dont i put a post in press f1 asking what people what they think." so, could you please put your favourite (pc, mac, linux) and a brief explanation. i know how this subject causes tension and some people type before they think. so think before say something stupid, you'll have a moderator to face up to if something "slips out ;)"

cheers

202297 2003-12-23 01:01:00 When this topic arises, people seem to forget that computer users have differing needs and what works for one person may not work for the next. However, I use a Mac at home and Windows at work and, from the point of view of an experienced but not so techno savvy user, I have found the Mac to be far superior.

The main reason is that I find the Mac's user interface to be far more simple and intuitive. When using Windows, I find it confusing how program icons are scattered between the desktop, the taskbar and the start menu. Mac OS X, on the other hand, has everything on the launcher which is consistently accessible. I have also found that my Windows machine at work regularly suffers from crashes and security issues, whereas the Mac seems to be virtually maintenance free. I therefore believe that the Mac's low operating costs more than make up for the slightly higher purchase price.

I tried Mandrake Linux for a breif period of time, but didn't find it very suitable, mainly because I found it incredibly difficult to install and configure peripherals (even simple stuff like printers and scanners). Of course, this may have changed in the last year or two.

202298 2003-12-23 03:17:00 shouldn't this be offtopic? ilikelinux (1418)
202299 2003-12-23 04:00:00 ok. ive changed it. anyway lets make it you say what version you use. for me my best ones are mandrake linux 9.0 and windows xp home edition. i would say windows 98se but it doesnt have the eye-candy or the fast user switching sa windoows xp has. i also say linux as the GUIs are inter-changeable and mandrake 9.0 will run on my 8 year old pc Megaman (344)
202300 2003-12-23 04:28:00 Well I do TRY to think before I type but I'm a little confused about your survey. Did you want posters from pressF1 to indicate support ( or otherwise ) for either an IBM compatible PC or an Apple PC.

PC = Personal computer. Both IBM and Mac are personal computers. In everyday usage the "PC" has come to mean IBM compatible and Mac is synonymous with Apple.

You then mention Linux which of course isn't a PC ( either Apple or IBM ).

Linux is an operating system and very good too.

The reason for this post is not to try and poke fun at anyone's choice but to try to define the terms of reference.

I also note that some people buy a computer to use at home which may well conflict with what they use at work. That one boils down to who spends the money.

I have no idea which of the two PCs are superior. My choice is IBM compatible using WindowsXP Pro. Maintenance costs are not an issue for me as I can do this myself. I have never wanted to open a Mac and I certainly don't intend to start now. :-)

I hope this helps.

202302 2003-12-23 04:44:00 my definitions...

PC: microsoft. (windows or DOS, but i dont know why anyone could possibly think dos is best!)

MAC: apple

Linux: that wonderful free open-source operating system

as you can see i dont mean the boxes, but i mean the OSs. however if you love a particular os because of the hardware (compatibility or the hardware it ships with/ works on) feel free to bring it up. one of the reasons i love mandrake linux 9.0 is that it will run on my 166mhz/32mb/40gb 8 year old ex-windows-95 box

I plan on installing Gentoo Linux on a 486 this weekend, just to kill some time over the Christmas holidays.

I think I'll put aMSN and MozillaFirebird and give it to the family to use as a Client on the LAN ;-)

202305 2003-12-23 04:58:00 If the Mac is really that good why don't they sell heaps of them ?

In all areas of life people will always try to save a bit of money when buying things. On a purchase of around $ 2,000 even one or two hundred dollars makes a big difference as to what they will buy. Same as saving $10 to buy a Chinese pair of shoes compared to a NZ made pair etc etc.

Even though, according to the Maczealots they wil save more than that in their own time and frustration.

I see Adobe now publish Photoshop on PC first and that Microsoft have stopped developing some programs for Macs !
