| 202346 | 2003-12-24 21:46:00 | It is funny how people like to bash things they haven't used before. Mac kids bash MS clones and MS clones bash Mac kids. All the while Linux junkies stand on the sidelines like a bunch of hippies and bemoan both of them for buying into false corporate ideals. I have extensive experience with MS, OS X and Linux. At present I am running a couple of Linux servers, a BSD firewall, a Windows workstation and an Apple iBook (along with a shiny iPod). I have to say they all have their pros and cons. If you are after a cheap and no fuss workstation then Windows wins hands down. Piece together any hardware, drop in the OS, install that pile of pirated software that everyone has and you are away for less than $1000. Sure it crashes and has as much class and a group of West Aucklanders in a Takapuna café but its cheap and it works. For the more experienced Linux is great. Do you want a webserver? Power desktop? Multi-processor, hardware redundant database? No problem one distro can do all that, but getting everything to work just right can take a while. The number of times Ive had to recompile a kernel just to get some obscure network card or onboard graphics chipset working just isnt worth thinking about. But once you get past that what you have a very stable, maintenance-free platform. If you are not a penny pincher, power hungry games fanatic or large-scale corporate buyer then Apples OS X is a winner. As has been said before its a complete package. My cellphone, iPod and iBook all sink perfectly via Bluetooth and Firewire (try doing that with MS/Linux). Sure you are limited to a fairly tight range of products but if you can afford a Mac then shelling out an extra $100 for the Cannon digital camera rather than that no-name Chinese model isnt a problem. Yes OS 8 & 9 werent very good compared to Windows XP, thats something even Apple acknowledges and has more than rectified with OS X. Who wins? The consumer (yes that old cliché). It would be a sad world if Apple or open-source alternatives like Linux did not exist. Sure MSs mainstream acceptance has been good for the industry, but just like West Auckland it is a nice place to visit, but I am glad I dont live there. Merry Christmas. |

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, remember? ;-) The long-term members of this forum will be well aware of my love affair with pretty PCs and how I was going to build one for myself . In the end however, practicality won out and I never did get a case with a window and pretty lights . What I did get was a good solid machine that does all that I want it to do and will serve me well for a good many years yet, including all the upgrades I might desire to have . And even if it is very plain it still looks pretty to me . :-) As far as Macs are concerned I have never done more than swipe a mouse across the screen of one in Big Byte but given half a chance I would have a good play on one . And unlike some people here I would be prepared to do a lap around Woolworths naked for one -- as long as the spectators were blindfolded . ;-) :D One day I'll build one with all the trimmings . . . . |

Today's PC mouses can have up to a dozen functions (or more?) available from up to 5 buttons/scroll wheel etc. I couldn't handle not having the right-click function at least |

Perhaps you should leave the pc building to those that can then . As to your other points . In a round about way you say if you want a cost effective powerful machine then go for a windows machine? Sounds good to me bubba . I don't see paying 3 times as much in order to get a slower performing machine as classy,But hey, what would i know . . . After all i would avoid Takapuna cafe society like the plauge . |
