| 202316 | 2003-12-23 11:59:00 | The way I see it, a Macintosh is like a Ferrari with BMW features... beautifully crafted on the outside; solid, quality running engine under the hood; and nifty nice looking chrome and wood finish thingees on the interior that you wondered how you ever lived without (like GPS and electric seats). and compared to what Microsoft PC's are showing up with... Holden engines in a Toyota. Sure, fast resource hungry engine, but lacking the quality craftmanship. And as for everything else... Microsoft says that you'll get what you're given (which happens to be what everyone else has) and you WILL like it. Would you expect to pay $40,000 for a Ferrari. Macintoshes are intuitive and they design of them is awesome. The are quick too, because they have big processor caches. I was only just told that the are purely powerful in their natural environment which is image editing... but they don't have the substitutes for Microsofts programs. How many programs do they run that are mirrored on PC? I thought that UT 2003 and RTCW were a few of them so surely the upcoming UT 2004 will be mac-friendly. I also see that 007: Nightfire is available for Mac... but apart from the Adobe and Macromedia apps I don't know any other programs that also run on PC. And IMO thats the only thing wrong with Macs. And have you seen the stunning design. The power buttons that you only have to touch, the hidden CD drives, the quietness, on the G4 cube you just drop the CD in a slot in the top and it seems to swallow your CD. On the G4 Powerbook, the keyboard is backlit... both the gaps between the keys and the letters on the keys light up. How the OS's up till now were **** and oldschool. Now that the panthers out of its cage the Mac suddenly seems more inviting. When I have the money and the time I intend to use Apples little case designs on my 'Beige Box.' This is my dream Apple: G4 Box. Dual Antlon 1GHz 2-4GBs of RAM GF4 Ti4200 2x 160GB drives 2x 17" widescreens 1x 20" widescreen (20" in the middle, 17" either side) Blue lights everywhere. However I am stuck with my Windows 2000 box which is stable too, but I long for MacOS X's interface and try to mimic it using stardocks tools but its not the same. As for Windows XP... I don't like to eat bugs and wait for hours while it decides what it's going to do. Linux? To much time... too little patience. Tried Mandrake 9.1 but too confusing. Now cold_fusions probably gonna come in here and tell you about Mac and its "shiny buttons." Cher and Merry Xmas. P.S. I am a Holden fan... but Holden = Performance Ferrari/BMW = Quality |

| 202319 | 2003-12-23 13:14:00 | PC vs Mac anyday.... why? More user-friendly More support More applications (free or otherwise) More aesthetically pleasing More customisable Less inane ownership by mad mac users More power More popular Better ergonomics Better hardware support More upgradeable LESS COST Macs are basically just for the old-school graphics maniacs that can't allow life to move on |

| 202322 | 2003-12-23 17:25:00 | Good points on both sides guys. Seriously, (I am a PC user and ex PC salesperson) so I have always been anti MAC especially when schools were fiull of them and students wanted to bring their work home but it would not work on their Dads home or work PC. I have a serious question. Years ago (say 8 or 9 years ago) it was accepetd that Macs were easier to use verus PCs and Windows. But then I read a short peice by an American commentator who said that the collection of utitlties calling itself an operating system on the Mac could not compare to Windows seamless approach. What did he mean by this ? I have never even touched a Mac so I dont know what their operating system is like except when I see it on Telecom's Xtra ads ! Digby |

If its just coz of the taskbar layout, then sack MS for not using the Quick Launch bar right etc! > > More aesthetically pleasing > More aesthetically pleasing?!?!?! | 202324 | 2003-12-23 20:10:00 | Well I have access to Pc's, Linux boxes and a Mac . I have no particular favourite although for general computer use, I would probably use a Windows PC . I use Linux for a internet gateway, backup machine, accounts system . Being raised on DOS/Windows, I find the Mac frustrating with its "drag and drop" philosophy . Windows has the best peripheral support so for general home use, Windows would be the way to go . You could argue that Mac must have something going for them as MS hasn't squashed them (yet) . They have focused on a particular market and I suppose have been successful in that they still have a business . |
