202764 2003-12-24 17:15:00 Have you tried replacing the Windows Help Files?

From memory:
C: = The Drive Windows is on, D: = CD Rom

1 - backup C:\Windows\Help to something else (a zip archive will do it, or just copy the folder to another directory).
2 - Put your Windows98 Setup CD in your drive and close the autorun
3 - Start > Find and use:
Search for: *.chm
Search in: *.cab
Search Directory/Location: D:

Windows Search should locate all the help files on the machine (assuming it can read the cab files) then you can just copy them into C:\Windows\Help and see if that works. If Windows can't read cab files (which will be a bugger), you could use Winzip to open them and check them one by one (a long process as there are ~60 cab files for Win98).
There is a way to do it using extract and DOS - I'll have a look around

Otherwise;
Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Windows Setup (tab)
Then somewhere in there (Accessibility or something) it will say Windows Help or something along the lines of that, deselect it, reboot the reselect it and try again.

Have you recently run the program EasyCleaner? The older versions tended to have this effect so if you have that program it would pay to update it to the latest version.

Let us know if CC's instructions helped or not.

202766 2003-12-25 13:34:00 Thank you Susan B & Cyberchuck.
Yep Susan...I think you hit it on the head!...Have EasyCleaner,
Version 2.0.5 ..Downloaded in October,
ran it once, back then, didn't like it & uninstalled!
Still have it in Document folder though!
Haven't run CC's fix yet though
Will wait until the brain...& the body get over all this Christmas cheer!
Thank you all, once again for your help.
Regards.

202767 2003-12-26 04:44:00 I am not entirely sure but the version of EasyCleaner that you have may not be an older one that caused this problem. My version is 2.0.5.324 and does not remove the help files. Susan B (19)
202768 2003-12-26 05:09:00 ToniArts Easycleaner prior to version 2.0 caused problems with Windows ME and XP help files - I don't think it ever affected Win98SE help files. Jen C (20)
202769 2003-12-27 14:54:00 Well, I had a go!..Not much success I'm afraid!
Windows help, (from explorer) is a 14MB. file!
Add/Remove has no file that big & I can't find one called 'Help' there anyway.
There are 109 *.cab files in my version of 98SE.
My 98SE disk is an "Update" only...The *.chm files are small, read only &
appear to be "reskit" files
The only other OS disk I have is a Compaq "QuickRestore disk"
I have the following "Tshoot" files
-"- .inf 9KB
- "- 98.inf 9KB
-"- .css 2KB
-"- 98 .chm 235KB
-"- . ocx 230KB
Hope all this makes some sense!
Would appear to be "between a rock & a hard place"
Looks like a 'Reinstall' ...eh!....& that won't be happening!...Lack the confidence!
Think I'll make do without T/shooter !
Thank you all.
Regards.

Just do it. ;-)

Put the CD in the drive, reboot and follow the instructions. If you get to a bit you are not sure about press Cancel and ask here what to do next. :-)
