203020 2003-12-25 08:54:00 Does anyone know how reliable CD-R's are?
I have Windows ME and use Adaptec DirectCD.
I have never had any trouble, but then I haven't used it very often.

203021 2003-12-25 09:05:00 Provided you don't use the CDR disk as a frisbee or let people put fingerprints all over them or let the dog eat them etc they should last OK. Funnily enough I just wanted a disk with software on I burnt about four years ago. Read perfectly. I have no idea if they last 100 years etc.

I'm not going to find out either as I'm not planning on living another 96 years. :-)

203022 2003-12-25 10:37:00 Quality is worth paying for with CD-R's.

Agreed that all _should_ last 100 years, but how realistic this is, I do not know (Heck, Im only 1/7th that age roughly).

I hate buying anything but Imation and Melody CD-R's. If I can, I gladly pay the extra for Kodak Gold + Silver Ultima CD's (650MB), as there has Never been a single drive these CD's dont work on that Ive come across, even when some normal CD's fail to read!

203023 2003-12-26 04:40:00 There was a thread here a while ago about the life span of CDs. Can't find the link at the moment but it was quite revealing - some CDs were only lasting a few years. You could do a search on the forum for it but not sure what search terms would find the thread the quickest.

CDs do not like heat and sunlight and will last longer if kept cool and in the dark.

203024 2003-12-26 19:48:00 That's right Susan, from memory the thread was prompted by some recent magazine articles (of which I read a couple) which had tested various 'no name/cheapo' CDR brands for storage longevity and found that storage life was as little as 2 years in some cases!
Just goes to show that 'you get what you pay for' .

Praise be Allah!

203025 2003-12-27 04:18:00 I don't know how long they will last, but I always check mine after I have burnt them . I just fire up a few files at random .

I have had one or 2 disks not work on this test, so it is worth doing .

I use CDR-Ws as I like to do regular backups and I fully reformat them, takes 20 minutes buyt it seems to be worth it as the quick erase sometimes does not work, when you come to burn you get CD errors .

I have had to throw away 2 or 3 CDR-W's (Imation and Emtec (Basf)) but that is not too bad compared to Floppy Disks where I have draws full of them and hardly any of them work after 4 years !

I could never work out if it was the cheap floppy disks or the cheap floppy drives, but they were a real pain and often did not work .

203026 2003-12-27 05:10:00 I have mostly been using Mitsubishi discs from Dick Smith. I got them because the brand name sounds good. Has anyone had any bad experiences with them? It has been worth reading people's replies as I hadn't really realised there could be big problems with them. ssssss (2100)

A couple of them actually and I have found them! :-)

Storing data on CDs ( . pcworld . co . nz/thread . jsp?forum=1&thread=41163" target="_blank">pressf1 . pcworld . co . nz) and CD storage breaking down with age ??? ( . pcworld . co . nz/thread . jsp?forum=1&thread=39029" target="_blank">pressf1 . pcworld . co . nz) . The links in those threads still work and provide quite good reading .

203028 2003-12-27 08:34:00 Thanks Susan B, Interesting.
I note one person warns not to bend CDs when removing from the case.
But my experience is that some CDs are impossible to remove from their case without bending.

203029 2003-12-27 11:46:00 I was doing a project for polytech in which I was making CDs for people. anyway i bought 3 boxes of 25 TDK 700MB CD-Rs from the warehouse (the ones that come in different colours in nice slim cases) not sure about life span etc of those CDs but out of the 75 CD's I had 10 that couldnt be burnt, and they were all from the same box. could have been a manufacturing error but it was werid neway. so i took them back and got a refund and now they're either in the tip or in the staff room serving as coasters on the coffee table of the Warehouse South City. dan1234 (5028)
