203119 2003-12-26 21:49:00 Thanks for ferreting out all that information Miami Steve, as I am intending to get URU - Myst 4 myself shortly. I have already played Myst 3 - Exile and it was fantastic - excellent graphics.

To supply the CD without a key was a bit silly on their behalf - imagine all those people who don't realise they have to get their key later!

203120 2003-12-26 21:56:00 Also, how are they going to control the distribution of CD keys. Nobody has said I need to take the CD with me when I go to get the key! It could be a free-for-all. Well I guess it's either that or everybody returns the CD's to the shop..... :D

Cheers

203121 2003-12-26 22:52:00 A couple of other things occured to me. If you are running windowsXP try downloading and applying the "XP safedisc fix" from microsofts website. It might help although I expect the copy protection on the disc is advanced beyond that patch working but it is worth a try.

If you cannot get a crack then there is one last thing that usually works but is not garanteed. There are special tools called daemon tools which make an image of the CD on your hardisk then mount that image to play the game. Because of the fact the image appears legitimate to the copy protection systems it will usually run wwithout the error occuring although the very latest copy protection problem is that the protection system looks for daemon type tools on your PC and refuses to work if they are present (I only know of one game with this problem so far though and the reaction to it has been such that they may be dropping this type of protection).

Ubisoft are well aware of the problem as these errors have been happening with Ubi releases for years now. It may be worth sending their tech support people an email and asking if they have a temp fix worked out yet (they often do).

203122 2003-12-27 02:40:00 Well I just happened to find myself in "Central Park Interactive" this afternoon so I took a look at URU - Ages Beyond Myst. The box on the shelf had on the back quite clearly a white label with the CD key printed on.

Sounds like it might be just the shop that you went to that hadn't put the CD Key sticker on the box. You wonder how they will notify previous customers of this error as I am sure some will want to play online eventually.

203123 2003-12-27 05:08:00 are you sure you have a legitimate copy of the game? the two characteristics you have described sounds to me like it may be a copy. Oh and daemon tools wont make an image of the cd, you'll have to use a program such as WinISO or Nero to make the image and then use Daemon tools to emulate the cd. although this is very unlikely that this will get past the copy protection, you normally still require a crack. Are we allowed to post links to site that contain cracks? this is to allow a forum member to play a game they did legally pay for. Pete O'Neil (250)
203124 2003-12-27 05:17:00 Hi Pete,

I am in no doubt that it is a legitimate CD. It was complete in a sealed box. I will wait until people are back at work after 5th Jan and demand a CD key at that stage. If I have no luck, I will get my money back and go to another retailer - simple! The inability to recognise the CD is a problem that I will have to try and overcome/circumvent using whatever means are required.

Thanks for your help

Cheers

I would suggest that it be done via email. ;-)

203126 2003-12-27 23:02:00 The thing about Daemon tools is when u mount an iso it emulates the copy protection.

You can make an iso that will never work if burnt to a cd because of the copy protection, but you can take the iso file, mount it on the virtual cd created by deamon tools, select which copy protection is on there and the file will work sweet as.

Deamon tools main purpose is to run iso files by getting around the copy protection.

203127 2003-12-28 21:30:00 I thought I would update everyone on what appears to be one of the biggest cock-ups of the year from UbiSoft. Apparently, every single copy of URU - Ages Beyond Myst in Australia was shipped without a CD key. See here. (blog.75thtrombone.com)

203128 2003-12-28 22:22:00 >>The entire continent of Australia has no CD keys for their copies of Uru

Crikey :O

Well I know of at least one box on a shelf that had a very visible key printed on the back of it ;-)

Wonder where they got that from - unless it was a random key they just stuck on the empty shelf-box copy of the game for example purposes only ?:|
