203135 2003-12-25 23:50:00 Hi. I installed a program a couple of weeks ago and it seems to have put somthing I don't want on the computer. Norton System Work (2003) goes nuts all the time saying there is a script or somthing along those time in c:/windows/system32/ - Enabling . It also randomly brings up a little box in the bottom right corner saying "checking messages" or somthing like that stays for about 10 seconds and then goes away. I also get pop ups all the time of companies trying to sell me stuff and win this or go here and alot of porn pop ups too. Also, if i leave the computer on over night while downloading, it somtimes downloads trojan's and viruses but norton picks them up. I have done a full scan with Norton and nothing and I have run Ad-aware and Spy Bot and nothing. Any ideas?

One more thing, I just looked at the processes I am running (using windows XP pro here) and there are quite a few I have never seen before. maybe if i list them it might help. I'll put a * next to the one that puzzle me....

Go to

www.computing.net

and do the scanning - I'm almost sure there will be an answer

Good luck

203137 2003-12-26 00:32:00 Do you have a firewall enabled? Is it the inbuilt XP one, or a third party program such as ZoneAlarm, Keiro or Agnitum Outpost?

Nortons might not pick up all the trojans, so try this program Trojan Remover (www.simplysup.com) and see what it finds.

203138 2003-12-26 00:41:00 I presume that you are using a Fire wall ?? :)
If so set all the processes and programs to 'ask first' then by a process of elimination you will find out what is not necessary.
I have the following blocked:-
Generic Host process for Win32 services.
NTVDK.exe
Run a DLL as an application.
Windows explorer
Windows media player.
Services & Controller app.
I also suggest that you run 'XP Anti Spy' which will get rid of a lot of the garbage in XP Home & Prof.
