2003-12-25 23:18:00 | Hi All, I got a "URU - Ages Beyond Myst" game which I have just installed only to find I have 2 problems (which I think will mean it goes back to the shop). Firstly, there is NO CD key which is required for on-line access. Secondly, even though the game is initiated by inserting the CD, as soon as I select "Play" from the menu it asks me to insert the correct CD. So, at this time I still haven't managed to get it running. Do I have any options other than to return the CD and box to the retailer? Is there any point in getting a replacement, or am I just destined not to be able to play the game? :( Cheers Miami

2003-12-25 23:31:00 | It sucks when this happens especially at christmas, if you have the recipt or know the person with the recipt and store is local, then you would be able to get a replacement if you tell them theres no cd key and it asks for the cd when its already in the drive,....one thing for certian is they wont refund your money for copyright reasons take it back and hassle them for a replacement and give your reasons.... but firstly you could try and uninstall it and reinstall it and see what happens.... are you sure theres nothing on the back of the cd case, or box or anywhere in the manual regarding a cdkey?

2003-12-25 23:42:00 | Hi Chris, Page 18 of the manual states Note: You will need the "CD key" located on the back of this manual cover to access URU Live. There is nothing on th eback of the manual except an ad for the 10th Anniversary DVD edition of Myst. I have searched carefully from the back to the front of the manual, checked the CD jewel case (inside and out) and checked every internal/external face on the box. There is no CD key! Is it possible that this one was just overlooked, or should I make the retailer open the box to ensure that any replacement has the key? The game not being able to find the CD is caused, presuambly by the copy protection used on the CD, so why would a replacement solve this? I have never before had a CD that has done this, and quite honestly, if it is copy protection that is causing it, I am going to be more than a little p****d off. X-( Cheers Miami

2003-12-25 23:56:00 | The CD Key itself should be on the manual or the disc cover. If it's not then return it and get a new copy. The other problem is a classic "copy protection" problem. Whatever the specifics of which type of "copy protection" related bug there are two ways to fix it. Number one and the supposed legitimate way is to upgrade the "firmware" for your CD drive itself which can be a nightmare as it is difficult to find firmware and some drive makers never bother updating it. Number two and again legitimate is to wait for the inevitable patch from the game company that fixes it (usually out within a month of relewase on most major games). Both the above MAY work but not for certain. A third and what some idiots consider an illegitimate method to fix it that is 100% garanteed to work EVERY time is to get a "crack" for the game and use that until the patch. If you have purchased a game and it will not work then you have the right to "fix" it so it works especially when you have paid hard earned cash to own the game and play it. Most cracks nowadays involve simply swapping a "fixed" game launching .exe for the original game launch .exe and bingo "copy protection" problems gone and you get to play your game. If you are GAME and want to find a COPY search the WORLD. Read the above sentence (lateral people but should be obvious) and work out the .com address to use to get yourself a fix. I would rather just write out the address but as I stated earlier some idiots think the use of cracks is wrong especially when you want to link to the source so I haven't but I have. Use the crack fix the "please insert CD" and play game. When the game is finally patched to fix what is a very common problem (insert "please insert CD error" into any major search engine) you swap back the original game launch .exe and patch and all will be well.

2003-12-26 00:00:00 | Thanks John, The site you were alluding to in your post was the first place I tried to go, but the site appears to be down. I am currently downloading the URU update from the UbiSoft site, so hopefully that will solve the problem. Cheers Miami

2003-12-26 00:05:00 | One more thing about a crack. Using a crack will mean you cannot play online. All it will allow is you to play the singleplayer game without being asked for a CD that is in the drive already. | John Grieve (367) | |
2003-12-26 00:46:00 | I've just downloaded (and installed) 10.3Mb of update from UbiSoft but apparently I still don't have the correct CD in the drive. Well, back to the shop it goes. Cheers Miami

But I'd just take it straight back to the retailer and ask them to change it for another copy, and yes make sure they open the box to check that everything is in there. Mike. |

2003-12-26 20:18:00 | Miami, Is "Uru - Ages Beyond Myst" the new Myst 4? Or is it a spin-off of the Myst series? Is it fully off-line capable (do you know that yet)? Or do you need to go online for some features? I had heard that they were going to make Myst 4 an offline game, but that you can expand the game into new areas through online play... Cheers, Mike.

| 203118 | 2003-12-26 21:34:00 | Hi Mike, OK, here's the latest. I took the game back to the retailer (Electronics Boutique) and pointed out there was no CD key. Their reply was "The URU Live site isn't up until February.". When I pointed out that I would still require a CD key at that time (and also told them that UbiSoft advised returning games without CD keys to retailers), they said that every copy of URU had been supplied without keys and that the boss had ordered some CD keys but he wasn't back until after the holidays!! They took my details and will contact me when the CD keys arrive. On the upside, they happily replaced the disk although I still get the error about not having the correct CD in the drive. At least it means that it is unlikely to be a faulty CD. Guess I'll just have to find another way around it. Is it possible that the message is being generated incorrectly? I have checked the minimum specs for the game and it specifies NVidia GEForce or ATi Radeon video cards. I have an NVidia TNT2. The options screen at startup of the game correctly identifies my video card and doesn't complain about it not being suitable, but can I trust it? As for your question Mike, yes URU is the new Myst 4. I had never played any of these games before, but in the UK recently I saw Exile:Myst 3 for sale at 5 quid, so grabbed a copy and couldn't stop playing it as soon as I got home. I read about URU and couldn't wait for it to come out. According to the box, and everything I have read, it is a complete offline game (just like Exile), but it also has an online subscription based component being launched in February, although if you check out the URU Live website where you can register, it indicates that a Broadband connection is required!!
