1352770 2013-09-04 23:23:00 Hi Team

I was following up on a previous issue with Winzip failing to operate, and this time I watched while opening and saw a message that it was an expired evaluation version . That is a bit of a bummer, because my old computer had a full version that worked for years, but I don't seem to have any key recorded to authenticate a reinstallation, so we'll let that pass .

What has pee'd me off properly though, is that the uninstaller for WinZip says it will delete all zipped files from my computer, which sounds like blackmail to me . If you had used the evaluation program for someting important you'd be pretty unhappy to find it had gone awol after removing the program! I did consider bulk renaming of all current zip files to some other suffix, but I can't be sure that they do not rely on the suffix alone to identify the files for deletion . I guess that it could just be scare tactics to make you pay up, as lawsuits for lost data might be an issue, but I am unwilling to dance that close to the flames .

Anyway, seeking alternatives, I spotted Peazip, which seems to be rated fairly well, but before I dive in is there anything I should know about this program before I download it and get back to work?

Cheers

1352771 2013-09-04 23:35:00 Pesonally these days I use 7Zip, does most everything you normally would use.

Well I never!

It always pays to ask the brains trust, proven time and time again!

Shame about the program though, it looked OK on the face of it.

Thanks for the heads up! 7Zip it is.............

Cheers

1352773 2013-09-05 00:03:00 Just thought I'd try it again from another site, in case it was sourceforge adding in a nasty.

Sadly not :( -- From filehippo ( usually reasonable good)

1352774 2013-09-05 00:04:00 WinZip doesn't remove zip files on uninstall... is it actual WinZip, and if so what version? Some of the very old versions used to warn you you would no longer be able to access ZIP archives, on the assumption you couldn't extract them without WinZip, but no version of WinZip has ever deleted zip files as part of the uninstall.

But I agree, 7zip is far better anyway.

1352775 2013-09-05 00:38:00 Yeah 7 zip here as well.
Windows built in support is good enough for simple zip tasks also, I mainly have 7 zip for other formats.

1352776 2013-09-05 02:25:00 7zip. All we've used here for the last few years. CYaBro (73)
1352777 2013-09-05 02:38:00 Its like cdburnerxp's default installer. It's got opencandy in it too. But there is another download you can get without it. Speedy Gonzales (78)
1352778 2013-09-05 08:35:00 Are you sure it didn't say it would remove the .ZIP file extension association or something?

Not that I ever tried uninstalling WinZIP when I used to use it.. don't any more though, I use WinRAR most of the time now. 7-Zip is good but I think the WinRAR interface is nicer.
