1352629 2013-09-03 09:32:00 I'm trying to block by site or keyword on a Netgear router with Netgear Genie installed. I've got the site and keyword fields filled in, pressed "apply" and logged out, but nothing is blocked. I'm missing a key step, right? bruce666 (8727)
1352630 2013-09-03 10:56:00 Sounds about right, BUT I wouldn't use network Genie, had sh1t loads of problems with that - do it manually.

On my Netgear its easy, select content filtering - Block sites - Type in the name / domain of the site, make sure you click an option at the top ( picture currently shown as not blocking) but if I wanted to block youtube I would click "always" or schedule and then click on schedule on the left to set days/times - then apply.

1352631 2013-09-03 21:32:00 replying to wainuitech ~ Yes I used to get that simple interface too. But doing everything "right" as you describe it didn't block the named site or keyword. Trying to solve that, I updated the router firmware and now logging into it I can only get the Genie interface. But the result (using the Genie/advanced tab which gives me manual blocking by site and keyword) is the same, no blocking results. BTW after the firmware update I lost all internet, Netgear help couldn't help cos the router was out of warranty, they directed me to Gearheads (@$AUS89) where it took a technician and me 3 hours 30 minutes on the phone to downdate the firmware and get internet again. But I still get the Genie interface when I log in to the router. All that aside, am I missing some step to get blocking to work? I click Apply and LogOut. Am I meant to restart/reset/reboot the router somehow after changing the setting? bruce666 (8727)
1352632 2013-09-03 23:21:00 Doesn't sound like you are doing anything wrong.

All you should have to do is click Always - Type in the site to block, Click Add Keyword ( should then show in list like pictured) - Apply.

No need to reboot the router, as clicking apply should activate the request.

Whats the site you are trying to block ?

1352633 2013-09-04 01:42:00 Urm... I don't have a clue about using a router to block sites. BUT... why not simply edit your Hosts (en.wikipedia.org) file? Greg (193)

1352635 2013-09-04 03:59:00 Remind me not to get netgear equipment then...I have never had issue with support with Linksys units, even out of warranty Nothing wrong with them, I have set many netgear routers to block sites, usually Facebook & Youtube and some torrent sites, and no problems. Some are set to block at certain hours, some are set to block always.

The problem with altering the Host file is it only relates to that PC, not much cop if the house hold has multiple devices. Anyone with a bit of knowledge ( meaning smart teens these days) its easy to alter the Host file to allow - a Router you at least need access to its settings which should be password protected.

To be honest I've never had any problems with Netgear equipment.

Only ever had one that was "suspect" and even now I think it was more to do with the owners place than the router. It was replaced under warranty anyway, but that one was doing the same thing ( disconnects) the person changed to Telstra Cable soon after that so different Netgear Router was installed. The Other Netgear I gave to a person as a loner when their Telecom one spat the dummy, a week later they did some work for me so we decided it a even trade - 2 years later its still going strong with no problems.
