If you must swim in the sea emulating a fish or other aquatic being, you run the risk of being eaten. Not the Shark's fault. I sympathize with the swimmers' family, but it was a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. mzee (3324)
1330628 2013-02-28 21:35:00 I feel the same.. If a shark was in our teritory, say, attacking people as it was swimming in the gutter up Queen St in Auckland. Then you could not blame us for having a go at it. We were in his territory and he was hungry. End of case.

I must say I have the greatest sympathy for the guy and his family.

1330629 2013-02-28 21:39:00 Well we trawl and longline for fish all around the West Coast perhaps we have taken too much of the sharks food supply. Anyone that swims at a West Coast beach from Fiordland to Cape Maria van Deimein risks their ass in the water from rips, waves, currents and sharks. prefect (6291)
1330630 2013-02-28 21:58:00 Everything I read or heard said much the same thing, "shark roaming its own natural territory,
human entertaining itself with food-like seal movements within shark's current feeding territory".

Sharks don't seem to even like humans as food, as a general observation they appear to take one
bite then go off looking for something else that is more to their liking. All said and done, it was a
pretty tough experience for the shark, getting potted with a rifle, that might hurt a bit.

I have every sympathy for the bloke and his family, but given the way in which we plunder
the sea's resources and pollute the rest, it wasn't a good outcome for the shark either. It may
not have survived the shooting, in which case it probably became shark fodder itself.

Cheers

1330631 2013-02-28 22:04:00 There's some comments I've seen that they shoot the shark because once they get a taste of human they can like it and look for it. Whether it's true or not. psycik (12851)
1330632 2013-02-28 22:17:00 More media sensational journalism. This story should not lead the news, it was one death. How many people have died on the road to Muriwai and rated one line in the paper?
A bus driver got killed in Sud Auckland yesterday why wasnt Cambell and 7 Sharp racing to cover it?

I don't know either way. I suspect it may be an old wive's tale to help justify our primitive urge for retribution.

1330634 2013-02-28 22:40:00 It certainly was a nasty thing to happen and our sympathy goes to the victim's family.

But why did the police have to shoot it? What good is that going to do? Absolutely no good at all. It was too late by then. The damage was done. As WalOne has said, perhaps it justifies our primitive urge for retribution. And that might work if all the other sharks in the area got to hear about the shooting and thought that they should not go looking for lunch at Muriwai Beach. Too dangerous.

1330635 2013-03-01 02:53:00 According to our beloved leaders and opinion manipulators (the news media), the reason why the police shot it was because they were trying to recover the body and it wasn't safe for the recovery operation unless they got the shark out of the way first. However, the film I saw didn't show the shark and the body in the same frame, so who knows? John H (8)

I don't think I'd be keen to jump into blood-filled water to recover a body if I knew there was one or more Great Whites in the vicinity....
