1329981 2013-03-02 21:11:00 I think Blue Druid should get a bike and ride it on the roads for a while and see how stupid some motorists can be. I do both and have much more respect for cyclists although I admit there are the odd stupid ones out there. Smart arse high school students are the worse cyclists.
:)

My point is not that all cyclists are bad (or stupid) or that all motorists are blameless. Just that cyclists are likely to reap harsher rewards for stupidity than motorists in any vehicle contact between the two. I already consider cycling to be far too dangerous for any sane person to undertake on public roads. I'd rather walk than take that risk, and walking is risky enough on it's own. Heh! Pedestrians can be stupid too.

1329982 2013-03-02 22:03:00 As someone who commutes regularly by cycle in Auckland the first thing on my mind is my safety. If my safety means breaking road rules then I'll happily do it. Through a red light... no problem if there are 2 buses behind me competing to run me over. Ride in the middle of my lane and hold traffic up... absolutely if there is a line of parked cars and no space between them and some house wife driving a remuera tractor who thinks she can probably squeeze past.

On the other hand I will happily wait at a safe red light and ride as far to the left as I safely can. I will only ride single file ever even though the law says I can sometimes ride 2 wide. I always indicate my turns and don't cut up inside lanes where traffic might be turning left. I try to be as courteous as possible to other road users, give cars a friendly wave when they give way (even though I have the right of way), have enough lights and dayglo gear that I look like a Xmas tree and generally try to be a safe cyclist but at the end of the day I'll do what's safest for me, regardless of legality or not.

Having cycled for 15 years and not been hit once I'm sticking to my approach.

1329983 2013-03-03 00:58:00 Me neither but I do find the whole lets blame the cyclist for stupid drivers a tad bit boring. It's the holier than thou attitude of drivers and those who regard drivers as never being wrong that is the problem as much as cyclists doing crazy things

1329984 2013-03-03 04:01:00 Ive generally not had any probs with any cyclist....... apart from the 2 i spoke of before...........ive not hit anyone or caused any accidents that i know of.........while i have been driving

Im not blaming the cyclist but then im not blaming the car peeps either........ an accident is just that, where something happens, something goes wrong, a lack of judgement, a moment of concentration loss.
But i do think those drivers, cyclists, motorbike peeps, if they go about and not ride / drive safely then yes something will happen, and the one that has the least amount of protection will get hurt.

I am a ex cyclist myself, and a ex motorbike person as well......... and ive had many a little car, and now have a 4x4.

In all manners of vehicles ive had near misses or accidents.......most of them while i was a passenger in the car......... i too ride, drive like it could be my last day on earth. and often i have children in my vehicle so i guess ive become more conscious of how i drive, how im role modeling and safety is paramount.
i dont blame the cyclist, but am not in a hurry to become one myself again. :)

Im not perfect i too make mistakes...... but im less vulnerable than a cyclist or motorcyclist, but i do remember the fear of not being seen by another driver..:(

1329985 2013-03-03 04:17:00 While riding years ago in England on a dead straight road (4 miles long) with no oncoming traffic a car overtook me and hit me on the elbow with his wing mirror rendering my arm numb and it was a real struggle to stay on the bike with a dead arm until I recovered enough gary67 (56)
1329986 2013-03-03 04:37:00 Maybe number plates on bikes like they had in Singapore. Then we could dob the cyclists in on car cam footage.
Something has to be done about their red light running.
