1329961 2013-02-27 04:36:00 I think if I were a cyclist (and I hope I shall never be again) the concept of preserving my hide in one piece would take precedence over any claiming of "right of way," even if it were legitimately mine. The reality is that motor vehicles are bigger, harder and faster and in any duel with them, the cyclist is going to lose. True, many motor vehicles are driven by idiots but that is no reason for a cyclist not to ride defensively in absolutely every situation. You simply cannot have any confidence that
1. the driver has seen you
2. that he will comply with the rules
3. will give you any indication of his intentions or take any notice of your indication.

If you don't want to get hurt, stay well away from motor vehicles. Walking isn't safe but it's heaps safer than cycling in the 21st century. Insurance companies should refuse to insure cyclists. It is an extremely high-risk activity. Sky diving is probably safer and they won't insure you if you make a habit of doing that.

1329963 2013-02-27 23:03:00 In my journey to work each day i deviate to drop peeps at school, and quite regularly get overtaken by cyclists.....at roundabouts etc. i often look for motorbikes, but it still gets me when this cyclist comes from behind and tries to dodge past me and go straight thru the roundabout when i am turning to the left. sometimes i think im all good and other times i only just catch a glimpse of him, sometimes he does turn. he is all kitted up in his gear, lycra and all, but always in black so nothing glaringly obvious...... he is playing chicken a little bit too often in my reckoning....... (one particular guy im thinking of is a regular offender)

and the other day on the way home in the 70km section saw this cyclist.......... seen him before too, in his fluro work vest, and reflective stickers on his back pack, work boots, and lots of reflective thingys on his bike...................and no helmit ?!?! ..... this is on a main arterail route to and from town, with a high use area of trucks of huge sizes.......... theres no way id be on it at peak times,on a cycle...... especially with out a helmit, ya just asking for trouble then..........

1329966 2013-03-02 04:35:00 Read an article over the weekend that I cannot find about a cyclist who was rammed from behind by a car doing 100kph and survived.

Do you know if the motorist who hit him was charged with dangerous driving (or similar)?

That too. It seems to me that motorists often get charged when it is clearly the cyclist's or pedestrian's fault and they get off scot free.

If they get away scot free, they obviously haven't been hit hard enough. Go back and do it again until you get it right. Only a lifetime in a wheelchair seems to convince them that their riding was stupid and sometimes not even then. Ever watched a wheelchair launch itself off the pavement under the wheels of oncoming traffic? I bet he was once a cyclist!

1329970 2013-03-02 06:35:00 As someone who rides to work every day, obeys all the road rules and generally behaves extremely safely on the road as I wish to live a long life I am amazed by the amount of stupid drivers doing exactly what you all claim cyclists do.

Yes some cyclist set a bad example doing all the wrong things but even more drivers do as well, it works both ways but all the right leaning communists on here will of course disagree and continue on in their blinkered ways thinking cars can do no wrong :devil
