1330647 2013-03-02 02:52:00 Very good!
To me a dead body is just an empty container. The spirit has gone. It doesn't make much difference how many pieces there are as they will be buried or incinerated. I had a weird experience in Tanzania where I was managing a Coffee plantation. An employee died in Hospital so I collected the body and returned it to his family. All hell broke loose because when they (Moslems) went to wash out the intestines, as they do, they found sacking which had been inserted to keep the shape. I had to go to the Hospital and returned with a plastic bag of guts, which kept them happy. I very much doubt that they were the original which were long gone in the incinerator!

That may be the case for you, but thankfully you are not the centre of the universe and don't possess any sort of universal truth! Thankfully (I hope) neither will you be making the kind of decisions the Police Officer had to make about which is more important - a family's grief and desire to have their loved one returned as whole as possible, as opposed to the possible death of or injury to a shark.

1330649 2013-03-02 04:08:00 But why did the police have to shoot it? What good is that going to do? Absolutely no good at all. It was too late by then. The damage was done.

According to the news reports that I have read the shark wouldn't let go of the body until it was shot at. I find that hard to believe though as sharks are very efficient at chomping through whatever they are eating with their dining equipment. I can't somehow imagine it swimming around with a body like a dog running around with a bone. I think it was more likely hanging around wanting to finish off its meal and the policeman had orders to recover the body which he couldn't do while the shark was around.

As others have said, I have the greatest of sympathy for the victim and his family but at the end of the day we choose to enter the sharks' domain and whilst the risk of attack is small it is still there. Don't blame the sharks and other sea creatures for doing what they are programmed to do - eat.

1330650 2013-03-03 19:52:00 Shooting at something in water is almost pointless. Counter-intuitively, the more powerful the gun, the less penetration you get.

In water, a 50 calibre sniper round will get less penetration than a 22 pistol bullet. Under a meter of water, you're pretty safe from any round.

That's because the shock of hitting the water stops "slow" low-energy bullets, and disintegrates powerful bullets into shrapnel.

The sound of bullets hitting the water probably scared it; I suspect it was untouched unless it breached the water.

Well I think the shark was pretty well on the surface, you are right a .223" bullet will not go far under water. Seen .303" and 8mm on trout but you needed a straight above shot like from a bridge. The 8mm was devastating like 200mm down you could see the bullet has hit the bottom and blown away the algae on the stones and moved the small stones. I reckon the feld polizei got in some hits.

Heh, I like it.

Wonder if they would have done the same thing if it was a whale? Or would that be considered Whaling and against the law?
