| 1330061 | 2013-02-26 03:06:00 | So do you think a person of 35 years of age with a family that was made redundant due to the recession accepting a new job in an alternative industry should be able to live a comfortable life in Godzone with $13.50 per hour? Should be able to get by with the essentials and a small selection of luxuries, yes. Two adults working on minimum wage will net about $900/week combined (about the same as an individual on just under $60k if I'm not mistaken). No, you won't be living in a big house in a posh area with flash cars, but most aren't anyway. But it's enough to get by reasonably enough if you're not silly with it - and honestly, if you're both on minimum wage long term, you may want to reevaluate your plans. Upskill or something. |

No, he should have been working for a long time already and be skilled enough to not require working in any minimum wage type jobs Living wage? Hell that recent study I saw was a mockery. It should be a "Minimum living wage" not a "Living wage enjoying expensive coffee, meats and other such things". The minimum wage shouldn't be comfortable for most, it should be a push to get people to upskill into better roles, if you ask me! As inphinity mentioned, $60K for a "couple" is most certainly doable. You'll never likely own your own home or a huge chunk of land in a large town, but that's not the Govts fault to rectify with a higher minimum wage. |

But then the global economy would falter (even worse than recently) and we'd be back to feudalism and barter in the blink of an eye. Thing is the reason that you and I get paid what we do is because there are very few people who can do the things that we do. ...because of this, we can afford luxury toys like the Nexus 4 :D |

I have a trade I can no longer do and 28 years worth of knowledge yet to get work I had to take minimum wage. Tell me where that's fair, it isn't worth getting out of bed for yet you have to unless you want to be a bludge on a benefit, incedentely I would have been better off on the benefit yet I swallowed my pride. I wonder how many of you saying minimum wage is ok would be prepared to accept it if you lost your current job and couldn't get another, I bet you wouldn't and would say oh know I won't work for that its beneath me |

Cardiac arrest, career stopped. Least still alive. Even when I go for temping jobs at the landfill which they referred get told as overqualified. I just chose to live off my own savings from the past, they asked me to do work from home with this machine that auto dials people doing some telemarketing stuff. When I was reading about Singapore. Many would think it's a classy place, big money to be made. While the tax is just 2% for most people the salary is adjusted, you could even ignore tax as it is so little. Shop assistants get paid $6/hr, tertiary qualified people get maybe $20k per year from tech (Polytech) or uni grads $30k and managers start as low as $60k in the big orgs (incl international companies) that's just the way it is. Unless you can call the no.s and be a consultant or self employed. While you hear about condo's, most of the residents incl. normal salaried foreign workers live in HDB which is a posher version of the NZ state house. I was told that you wouldn't have the aircon going all day, your'e either at work/study or in the malls. Some places advertise their place as windy to save on the power. |
