1352713 2013-09-04 08:54:00 You can download a W7 ISO if Needed.

Just check to make sure the COA is not pirated.Legally if you purchased it you are meant to be given the COA.

One simple test is copy the product key into a google search - if it doesn't find anything its generally legit, BUT if its pirated theres a 99% chance OR a default install 30 day key it will show results, esp from torrent sites and forums with people complaining.

1352714 2013-09-04 09:32:00 unless you have to redo windows, you don't need the COA or the DVD disc. you can create system image .... and later you can restore that IME it has not asked me for the COA or require the DVD disc.
you can go to control panel - backup I think it is. and over there you can create the image and or create a boot CD.

1352715 2013-09-04 20:19:00 "builder" says I don't need one 'cause W7 can e.g repair itself or if necessary go back to using system restore.
Take it back and get your money back.

The only reason any legit tech would not supply the COA and disk is because it's pirated.

Any real tech would build it with an OEM version of WIndows which comes with disk in plastic case, COA sticker etc.

1352716 2013-09-05 00:26:00 but with W7 I didn't get a disk, the "builder" says I don't need one 'cause W7 can e.g repair itself or if necessary go back to using system restore.

The "system builder" told you a bunch of BS
Ask him WHY you didnt get the install disk. Sounds dodgy

Win7 CANNOT just repair itself, if its badly corrupt or the Hard Drive fails/hickups . System restore often doesnt work to repair serious Win faults
You should have a COA sticker on the case somewhere, if not youve been had. You want that sticker, not just the product\install key (5 x5 characters)

If youve been given a pirated install key(Im not saying it is) , then dont be to surprised if Win stops working one day after MS/Windows marks your install as pirated .

Totally agree there.

I have a customers HP PC here right now, Windows 7 totally toasted, the repair CD's wont /cant find the OS ( left it running overnight and it still searching 14 hours later) , even the recovery partition options wont work, having to reinstall their OS using the COA on the side of the case using my own Windows 7 DVD's.

Re -read post 12, check if its a pirated COA. If you paid for it you legally have to be given it, the other actions is "sometimes" a Technet or MSDN COA is used and will show as legit, BUT its illegal to give /sell those.

1352718 2013-09-05 02:13:00 Interestingly, I've recently seen a couple of brand new HP laptops shipped and sealed directly from HP with Win 7 installed, but without a COA. (Yes, I checked under the battery). Antmannz (6583)

A number of the large OEMs have transitioned to using BIOS-based product keys for Win7/8, so will no longer have a COA sticker.
