1353301 2013-09-11 10:12:00 I am running Windows XP Pro which I have kept fully updated since SR3.

There has been very many up dates since SR3

I believe that MS will be withdrawing support for this operating system sometime in April 2014.

Is that correct ?

Will they be issuing SR4 at the time that this support ends ?

If not, is there, or will there be an unofficial version of SR4 ?

Failing that are all the up dates subsequent to SR3 stored on my machine somewhere that I could backup to CD to use if I have to re-install my system.

I’ve been using MS since win 3.1 and am very comfortable with XP. It is an excellent op system to my mind and would like to continue using it.

Cheers,
Phil H.

1353302 2013-09-11 10:28:00 Yes XP will stop support in April 2014.

You can download all the available updates and save them for off line use.

Personally I use wsusoffline (http://download.wsusoffline.net/) -It also does several other OS's as well as Office products. Keep in mind when doing downloads it will originally take Gigabytes - At the moment the folder on mine is over 10GB, and its out of date by several months.

To run it you double click the update Generator

5178

Then to run it ( install updates) open the client folder and click Update installer

5179

I save the whole thing to a USB drive, plug it in, click the installer, select what you want ( OS or Office) and let it run.

As for SR4 -- Doubt it, MS have been trying to kill XP for several years already, can t see them doing anything more.

1353303 2013-09-11 10:43:00 When the support for XP finishes, I'll just use something like Nlite and something like this. (www.ryanvm.net)

They update this monthly. But, as you can see they havent done this months yet. But this includes everything (.net framework / updates, IE and updates, WMP and updates).

All you have to do is slipstream it, (add drivers if you want), create the ISO then burn it

No installation necessary?

Am I right to say that just unzip the whole thing to the USB drive, then run from there?

Compatible with Win8?

How it works is all the files / updates / Service packs etc are in the folders as show in the picture . When you click the installer it has a look at what you have,( and what updates if any are already installed) and puts in whats required,( not all updates get installed on all PC's) lets say XP with office 2007, it will run and install updates relating to those products .
The updates install as they would normally on their own . ( all you see is a Command window and files installing)

You have to reboot when finished and re-run again, as some updates wont install until previous ones have (same as if you are doing it online Via windows updates) .

No zipped file, as its all on the USB drive and installs from there, just saves having to download them all over again .

I'm doing one today on a W7, I'll try to remember and post a pic of it working .

1353306 2013-09-11 23:00:00 Adding to above, this is a W7 with Office 2007, updating as described Running directly from the USB Drive.

Tick what you want first:
5182

Then it checked all the files required, installing office SP3

5180

After SP3 was installed, carried on:

5181

When finished it prompted for a reboot.

Rerun it again, and it installed another couple.

1353307 2013-09-11 23:10:00 1. Got to update it one by one, Office SP3, then all others?

2. Can you tick all of them and go at once?

It does it all automatically, all you do is click start on the main window and sit back, it checks to see what's required, it will do the rest. It will check updates required for Windows and office if you have downloaded them.

Mines got Office 2003, 2007,2010, XP x86, Vista x86, Windows 7 X86 & x64, Windows 8 x64. Hence the now 10.9GB on a USB drive ( updated it this morning)

As mentioned earlier, some updates wont install until previous ones install first (exactly the same as doing it Via windows update) so once its finished, you reboot, rerun it, and it may or may not put in more.
