1352675 2013-09-04 04:29:00 Is it time to buy a good modem and if so what please?

We have a Telecom supplied Thomson wireless modem which is playing up after about 4 years use. Our area connection speed is good. The Thomson is dropping the connection quite often and this despite a lengthy conference with the Telecom help section to completely re-set it. It was OK for about a week and is progressively getting cranky again. I like to stream BBC World News so this line-dropping is a real nuisance. We run Win 7 64 bit, 4Gb ram...this should be enough computer capability shouldn't it please? The help guy from Telecom ( Phillipines ), confirmed the modem was dropping the connection often and warned me if the modem couldn't be re-set correctly I'd be up for technicians' charges .

I feel the money would be better spent in some better gear. Am I correct and if so what would good advice be re brand and ease of setup as although I try, I am no real techno? Or am I on the wrong track and/or missing a trick or two?

1352676 2013-09-04 04:55:00 Do you just have that PC in the house, or do you need wireless also? Alex B (15479)
1352677 2013-09-04 05:46:00 Oh yes!///forgot to mention this sorry.. we do use and need wireless in the house; actually the Thomson seems quite good at that bit, it is just the line dropping problem that is driving me near to nuts at times. jwig (15664)
1352678 2013-09-04 05:58:00 If you talk to Telcom nicely, they will replace it with a brand new model FREE. I did it for a few of my friends and they all got theirs sent to them within 2~3 days. bk T (215)

Thanks indeed for this idea bk T and I certainly will try to talk to Telecom to-morrow. I was wondering if I was expecting too much to stream BBC TV but the dropouts were happening even with email connections alone.

1352680 2013-09-04 09:48:00 There are lots of other reasons why your line could be being dropped, of course. It might be the modem but then again it could easily be a line fault, faulty port, bad house wiring, bad house phone filter etc etc.

But a new modem would help determine this!

Yes I agree, Thanks linw. You make good points. I'll have to figure out ways to eliminate the other "suspects" and no doubt Telecom will have their procedures. In fact I went through a few before with the Phillipines help guy before the first factory re-set.

But do some modems pack up more frequently than others? Is there a brand that is more suitable for streaming?

1352682 2013-09-04 10:08:00 Yeah ditch the Thomson, easiest way to ensure it's not the issue, and those things are *easy* to make fall over, like REAL easy! Look up a DrayTek. The DV120 is a nice one if you combo it with something like a TP-Link TL-WR1043ND.

Alternatively, try something like the DrayTek DV2760 which is forward-compatible with VDSL2, and *incredibly* solid!

At least if you go with something like that you will have absolutely ruled out that the issue is at your end.

Thanks for giving me such a clear and positive steer on the hardware Chill. There is just so much stuff available that the forward-compatible product sounds like a solid investment, and especially when I'm paying to have streamed content that at the moment I can't stream. DrayTek is a new name to me so I'll get investigating.
