2003-12-28 17:25:00 | Does anyone know of any alternate free program like icq that lets you send text messages to cellphone for free?and also lets u use the cellphone to text back the sender? | yingxuan (3330) | |
2003-12-30 08:46:00 | The Jabber Server apparantly has the ability to be installed with an SMS gateway, so I guess you could set up your own server for local use and then run a Jabber client to connect to the Jabber Server and then relay through the Jabber SMS gateway? This would solve half of the question and could possibly enable you some free SMS messages. The only problem I can see is that AFAIK you can't respond via SMS back to the Jabber Client.

2004-01-03 18:55:00 | There are 2 parts to the program - client and server. From what I can gather you setup the server as you want it running (do you wish to be able to talk to people outside your domain, do you want SMS Services, What's the registration policy and all the other stuff that goes with setting up the server). Then you use a Jabber Client (one capable of the features supported by the server) to connect to the Jabber Server, register your account and then use the program to communicate with others via their Jabber Accounts or SMS.

2004-01-03 19:05:00 | Where is the server which turns what is put into the Jabber Server into an SMS message? As far as I know, you need special hardware to be able to do that. | somebody (208) | |

2004-01-03 20:03:00 | I did a google search a while back, and there were several online providers which provided web to SMS messaging free of charge. Finding one which works in NZ was the only thing which proved difficult, but I suspect that it must be possible. | somebody (208) | |
2004-01-03 21:42:00 | Hiya, I google'd free SMS programs previously and found nothing of use, everything is for europe or the states. ICQ would probably be the best because it is easy to use/setup I'd say just stick to ICQ... - David
