203962 2003-12-29 08:19:00 If the Nortons came preinstalled with your original computer, and you don't have the discs, then it won't start from day one again. Bear in mind, that preinstalled Nortons are usually 3month "free updates" versions.

If however, you have the original Nortons disks - then a reformat will start your 12month subscription over again.

203963 2003-12-29 09:13:00 Just going off the beaten track slighty i to have Win Me and i also am useing Norton AV 2001 and pay the sub each year.
I had to use system restore last week and all seemed to go well untill reboot time the computer fired up and did the normal stuff and then the Win Me splash screen. But then the message NORTON AV FAILED TO INITIALIZE DATABASE. So then i pressed ok which is the only option you are given and Windows fired up as normal But NAV had the red cross across it and would not work. So after reinstalling NAV a couple of times and still the same message i looked at the Symantec web site and searching for NAV 2001 and Win Me to my surpise if was a known problem. What happens is when you do system restore it mucks all the virus defintions up. So nav won't work so to cure this problem you have to download the HAWKING TOOl.EXE double click it and it fires up liveup date and downloads all the files and virus defintions needed to fix NAV and get it running again. Hopefully this may be of some help to users who are faced with the same problem.

Happy new year to you all.
Cheers Chris

203965 2003-12-29 19:55:00 Thanks Chris, I had the same thing happen once when I used system restore.
I found it fixed itself with the next auto-update of definitions but its great to see there a way to fix it straight away. Its madness to be without some kind of protection even for a few days.
