203653 2003-12-28 07:59:00 Xfce4 is a window manager?

Something lighter than gnome? As a desktop environment? I could switch to KDE from the Linux discs, other than that what do I do?

203654 2003-12-28 08:01:00 Sorry, small possibly confusing typo there:

>I couldn't find X.

Should be "IT" couldn't find X.

Well.. A whole Desktop Environment to tell the truth. It uses xfwm4 which is its own Window Manager.

Much lighter than GNOME. There's rpm's on the website (xfce.org).

Dont even think about KDE if GNOME is slow.. KDE 3.2 is being released soon which will supposedly be faster than GNOME, but not for now. Try Xfce4, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised :-)

203656 2003-12-28 08:16:00 Xfce4, and not IceWM?

Seeing as I have got this far (or not?) with IceWM should I go ahead and give it a try first and then switch again to Xfce4 later? Get a broad view of the options etc also.

IceWM still uses Gnome right? Or is it just compatible?
Ender (5019)
203657 2003-12-28 09:17:00 Well, IceWM seems to be dead, see above, I will now try the suggested Xfce4. Or tomorrow. Yes, tomorrow is good.

I'm Chilling quietly.

203658 2003-12-28 13:05:00 Yes, IceWM will still use GNOME, so there will likely be precious little performance boost gained over Metacity (Ive tried OpenBox for a while too, but ended up only using that for vnc and used Metacity with my actual GNOME setup).

Xfce4 is called "The Cholesterol Free Desktop Environment"....
Basically its a replacement for GNOME/Kde...

IMHO, You're not going to notice the difference with IceWM, so why bother.

If you're wanting speed, then try Xfce, or better still, run twm with nothing but an xterm ;-)

*That last half of the sentance was sarcasm.. just in case..*

Chill.

203659 2003-12-28 20:46:00 ...Metacity.....OpenBox......vnc.... what?

What does IMHO stand for?

Is it possible to edit posts in these forums?

Whats twm? I could run it with just a terminal. I can navigate directories, copy delete move files etc, and you spend half your time typing commands in there anyway to install stuff (the other half is waiting), I'm reading the Rute User's Tutorial and Exposition, haven't got to actually running programs from the terminal yet, but typing 'nautilus' opens the GUI file manager.

The terminal does go considerably faster than the GUI part of things, yes.

Opening OpenOffice.org Writer takes longer than starting the computer.
And believe me, thats a loooong time.

So anyway, I'm trying Xfce 4 now - downloaded it last night. Its rpm format rather than just compressed archives - rpms self install right? No compiling things first, and running all from the terminal...?

203660 2003-12-28 20:52:00 As Chill would say... you need VectorLinux for your P150. It would go much better than Redhat. Dolby Digital (160)
203661 2003-12-28 20:54:00 VectorLinux now? What's that? I thought I was going to install Xfce 4!

Wait... vectors...= lines. Line-drawn graphics?
A window manager or desktop wotchacallit with a GUI, but a very basic GUI?

In My Humble Opinion

Nope

A rather.... "crude" window manager... Well, maybe not, but its not as functional as others.

I do same.. Ive got about 10 xterm's open right now :-)

Yep, that's for GNOME, KDE's is Konqueror and Xfce uses xffm

Web-browsing just isnt quite as fun though.. Centericq is good for IM ;-)

My PC takes about 30 seconds from star to finish... OpenOffice takes about 5 seconds?

Yep :-) As long as you didnt get the srpms (Source rpms) you should be good to go in about 20 seconds + configuration it might want..

Hopefully not :-)
