203610 2003-12-28 03:09:00 By expensive I mean for example ihug 12 hours for $9.95 60 hours for $19.95
Xtra 10 hours for $10 and excess hours charged at over $2 per hour.

It is possible to get a good ISP with charges like 30 hours for under $10 and 150 hours for under $20 with excess hours for $1 an hour or less.
The cheapest is not always the best of course so you need to weigh up other things as well.

I suggest you email a selection of ISP's requesting information on their plans, and see how long it takes to get a reply.

If you get a reply within 2 hours or less than I suggest you give serious consideration to that ISP. I don't mean some automated reply either but a real email from a real person who obviously has an interest in helping a pontential or actual customer.

203611 2003-12-28 03:22:00 I joined ihug when the internet was just starting and they were the only ISP with unlimited access at that stage so I have been with them a long time and always a loyal supporter.

Unfortunately the speed and downloads in the last 12 months have shown a marked deterioration and if you do not have another ISP to compare with you might not have noticed it Craig.

203612 2003-12-28 06:16:00 Hi dan1234,
My next door neighbour is with Quicksilver & they are always getting bumped off. They don't have problems connecting though.

I'm with Clear & find them quite good overall except for their small hiccup a few weeks ago but Xtra have had more problems. I used to be with Actrix but they were more expensive.

203613 2003-12-28 08:29:00 I use Paradise, but am rural, Waimak district, but have no hassles with it. Download speeds, wouldn't have the foggiest, as it is quick enough for me, on an old puter. But I have three of the family living in Chch who use it, and two of them have changed from Clear, and one from Xtra, and they say it is fine in town. $20 for 250 hours. supergran (108)
203614 2003-12-28 09:03:00 My vote goes for Paradise. We are very very rural, the very end of the telephone line :-), next stop Pacific Ocean :-)

Connect first time every time at around 38000-45000bps.

Never been dumped over around 4-5 years.

203615 2003-12-28 09:35:00 Actrix has been good for me, in Auck., and my arse is totally unsucked brewer (4389)
203616 2003-12-28 11:23:00 So Actrix is pretty good huh? How much is their flatrate deal??? and no sudden dis-connections ever?
Do they alsp have that 3 months in advance scheme like Slingshot?

203617 2003-12-28 12:34:00 Hi Dan1234
I'm in Chch and use Slingshot. $17 a month unlimited, always connects first time, never get bumped and speed varies between 46 to 50.6 Kbps depending on the time of day.
Thoroughly recommend them.

PS. If your going to join Slingshot, let me recommend you and I get 1 month free. :)

203618 2003-12-28 19:36:00 I would recommend Xtra. I never have problems connecting, never get kicked off, and can consistently connect at 52kb/s first time every time (sometimes as high as 53.2). The only problem is cost - at $27.95 Flat Rate per month, it's quite a bit more expensive than other ISPs. somebody (208)
203619 2003-12-28 21:02:00 We're pretty rural and we connect at 48 kpbs or 52 kpbs .

Only get kicked off every 24 hrs because that is part of xtras terms and conditions i think .

I can leave the internet on for 24 hrs without being kicked off .

Only problem is but i think thats telecom is that often there is no dial tone on both of our telephone lines . Quite frustrating but it comes back . Doesnt happen that often, but meh . Still . Xtras good
