203635 2003-12-28 02:43:00 I'm looking for a digital camera.
At least 3 Meg Pixels and Optical zoom beyond 3X would be nice.
Not entirely point and shoot.
Any recommendations?

203636 2003-12-28 03:34:00 Depends on what you want to use it for really. If you want to use it in the great outdoors, remember that digital cams DO NOT like getting wet. For a good lightweight compact camera to use tramping, fishing, in the rain etc, you can't go past the Olympus mju300 or mju400. Tried and true lenses, which are more important in some ways than the pixel count.

For digital camera reviews, go here: www.dpreview.com

The mju300 and mju400 have a different name in the US, but you should be able to locate them. I think they are called the Stylus300 and 400. You should be able to get the higher spec mju400 for between $850 and $886.

203637 2003-12-28 04:07:00 Fuji Fine Pix S3000 3.2 megapixel, 6x optical zoom, records movies with sound at 320x240, voice annotation, burst capability plus has a decent range of user defined controls over and above its point and shoot ability. Good on batteries so long as you use nimh rechargables. Dick Smith have them for $649

Bad points- comes with a 16 meg xd card which is hopless on max settings (about 12 to 13 shots) so a larger capacity xd card needed.Dick Smith have these too at about $65 for a 64 meg card and roughly double for a 128 meg card (50 and 100 shots at max setting respectively)
Takes very nice pictures, good clarity, excellent colour.
I have one and I like it a lot

203641 2003-12-28 08:39:00 cheers for that. my mate is again thinking of the s3000. he was told he cannot do those things by a guy at dicky smiths and at harvey norman nomad (3693)
203642 2004-01-07 07:50:00 I own an S3000. It does not have sound. The previous model (S304 or something) did.

The 6x optical is great and for the price I paid (<$500 staff price) I couldn't find a better deal. I had to choose between a higher megapixel or a higher optical zoom - I went for the latter as 3mp is more than enough for standard 6x8 prints.

The xD format annoys me as only Fujifilm & Olympus use it. SD cards are much more common and I can't see the benefit of xD over SD. I'm unlikely to have another device which uses xD cards while everyone (except for Sony) seems to be going the SD route.
