2003-12-27 23:30:00 | I'm going to change ISP's (using freenet presently & even though it's unlimited hours for $15 it can sometimes take 3 or 4 tries to connect, and after that it frequently times out & sucks arse, never connecting faster than 40000bps) so, i'm looking for people's opinions on what ISP they use and their comments on the service they provide. ie. ease of connecting, speed usually connected at, timeouts, problems they had, $$ for hours etc. P.S I'm only concerned with dial up connections using a 56K modem from a major centre (I live in Chch so shouldnt be a problem with bad phone lines etc.) thanks, looking forward to your thoughts :)

2003-12-27 23:37:00 | I would recommend ihug. I connect at 56kbps first time, am never disconnected, and it has free virus and spam filtering service - (in several years of using ihug I have not once received spam or a virus via email). | Craig (448) | |
2003-12-27 23:39:00 | yeh i had freenet but still have adsl and ihug now, ihug is reliable as well | ilikelinux (1418) | |
2003-12-27 23:44:00 | i use slingshotv its $17 per month unlimited payable 3 months in advance , usually connect 1st try and is fairly reliable and fast 44 to 48kbs in wgtn | kiwibeat (304) | |
2003-12-28 00:04:00 | I have several ISP's ihug being one of them and though it was good sometime ago I find now that speed is very poor and frequently some web pages are slow to load or do not load completely and as a result I do not use ihug very much as it is too frustrating. There are other ISP's which are less expensive and have a faster more reliable connection Initially I received very little spam but with the introduction of ihug spam filter which was optional, for some reason the spam increased dramatically and have now been forced to subscribe to it and it does in fact do quite a good job of removing it. Craig - if you have never received spam or a virus it is pure luck on your part and has no bearing on the ISP you are using.

2003-12-28 02:18:00 | Dan I've used Actrix for several years now and find them very satisfactory - various rates (see their website - www.actrix.co.nz), always reliable, great help desk. I tried 2 others when first connected but wouldn't change from Actrix now. Jay

2003-12-28 02:27:00 | i use clearnet unlimited but it can be unreliable. you may have heard about 2-3 weeks ago how clear crapped out. $24 | Megaman (344) | |
2003-12-28 02:30:00 | but clear does have up points. over my 56k dynalink modem i get 52-50.6 kbps. plus downloads are pretty fast | Megaman (344) | |
2003-12-28 03:07:00 | Maybe ihug is just good to me because I've used it for almost as long as they've been around :D | Craig (448) | |
