2003-12-30 12:02:00 | Im looking to buy a vid card, something that will be able to run Half Life 2 well, and Doom 3... i have no idea about vid cards anymore, can anyone help me? | Mr_T (5031) | |

2003-12-30 13:22:00 | i often here that ATI cards are better though? that they out perform g force cards, is this true? (sorry i dontknow much at all! but I want to!) | Mr_T (5031) | |
2003-12-30 14:04:00 | Yes,The ati cards outperform the currently available nvidia cards,Especially when rendering dx9 effects(whch presumibly the games you mentioned will make use of to a large degree). They are also cheaper then the nvidia cards 9600xt has excellent performence,is an excellent price and comes with a voucher to get a free copy of Halflife2. 9800xt would be even better.

2003-12-30 17:29:00 | Most people seem to be going for the ATI cards, many say that they're 'just for gaming' and that's exactly what they want. I have a Geforce 4 Ti4200 and that works fine for me, I prefer nVidia for the simple fact that they've been there for a while and I trust them. nVidia are more widely used and I'm sure that soon, they'll get back into the game out-do ATI... though it's a constant race and whatever you buy will be classified as a 'rubbish' video card very quickly. I bought my card for $400 in April, now it's $200. Whatever you buy isn't going to be top of the line for very long. If you do go for one, I can get some cards that come with Half-Life II coupons... just let me know what you're after and I'll see what I can find.

2003-12-30 18:30:00 | ati cards are not built just for gaming. with my ati radeon 9100 vivo pro i can capture heaps (like in hours) without dropping ANY frames.

Apparently the FX 5950 has extra enhancements specifically to increase the fps in Half-Life 2 Engine-based games . . . . But yes, I agree that anything "FX", as long as it has "Ultra" tagged on the name somewhere, you should be good :-) 5600 Ultra's are good all-rounders I hear . . . . . . |

2003-12-30 20:30:00 | I have built several PC's for gamers recently using both Radeons (9600 and up) and Geforce cards (FX5900, 4600ti). Heres what I have learnt so far. Radeon drivers are a nightmare. Some games require certain versions of drivers to work properly. In other words the drivers are still being developed and those released so far while working are not as predictable as the drivers for the GeForce range of cards. Eventually the Catalyst drivers (for Radeons) will get totally stable but for now I would avoid them especially as you claim to have little knowledge of vidcards. For sheer speed and excellent quality pictures you cannot fault the FX5900 (Asus is $700) and it will run both games you mentioned well. Whatever you do do not by a card that is a lite/cheap version of the chipset as these cards usually perform way below a full fledged card with all its tech present on the card. As has been said stick to "Ultra" version cards.

2003-12-30 21:47:00 | You better check what sort of AGP rating your motherboard can take first. No point stuffing a 8x AGP card in a motherboard which only supports 2x AGP. | Jen C (20) | |
2003-12-30 21:59:00 | We really need to know what sort of PC that you are running does it have a AGP slot in it which supportys 8x or 4x etc waste of time to get a top of the line card if your cpu is a celeron 400 .
