204183 2003-12-30 07:06:00 odd problem - i've got a dell machine, which i've just put a ghosted harddrive into. When i start the pc i can use the keyboard and am able to type, but when windows starts up, the keyboard doesn't go at all! the keyboard works in dos (at safe command prompt startup, and also in windows safe mode,) but when i let windows start normally, i get no response from any keys. the keyboard is a standard ps/2 keyboard. Actually i've tried two different keyboards, both of which work quite happily on another pc i've got and there are no special keys or anything so the keyboards do not need installation disks. any solutions? speed_54 (5051)
204184 2003-12-30 07:24:00 Presuming the image on the Ghosted hard drive did not originate on this machine, I would delete the keyboard entry in device manager and allow the keyboard to be detected again and new drivers loaded.

If this OS image belonged to another machine I suspect you may have a few other hardware issues as time goes on.

Cheers

204185 2003-12-30 08:44:00 already tried that. i've even gone as far as removing the keyboard entry in win.ini with no joy speed_54 (5051)
204186 2003-12-30 09:03:00 win.ini? I'm guessing this isn't XP :D

You've probably got all sorts of problems, not just the keyboard... it might be a motherboard issue or similar. I'm not saying there's something wrong with the board, but rather that if you've installed Win9x on another computer, then ghosted it onto this one, well its all setup for the other machine, including keyboard, motherboard, hard drives etc. Win9x doesn't like hardware upgrades (which XP handles very well).

If I were you I'd install Windows from scratch, and you'll probably find everything works how it should (well, as much as win9x will let it).

204187 2003-12-31 04:54:00 true, i would have done it from scratch if i didn't need the data, or the software which is installed. however, as it's not my data to destroy, i need to find another solution.... speed_54 (5051)
204188 2003-12-31 05:00:00 It's always a bit iffy to run an OS in anything other than the "computer" it was installed on.

The safest way to handle this would be to have that disk as a slave drive on the machine, and access the data with programmes in the OS actually installed on the box.

204189 2003-12-31 05:07:00 i agree. however, as the computer already has a user partitioned slave harddrive and also a cdrom & cdwriter on the secondary ide, this i cannot do... I have used ghost before in the same way on other systems with no ill effects so this one has me stumped. ?:| speed_54 (5051)

It shouldn't have you stumped - the explanation is quite clear. Sure you may not have had problems before, but it doesn't mean you never will. Windows 9x does not like hardware changes, and this time its telling you so.

204191 2004-01-02 04:24:00 thanks to all the people who responded. I finally sorted out the problem by upgrading the old harddrive on the old machine to 98SE, then reghosted the harddrive, and the keyboard now works. I suspect now that it was a small hardware incompatibility within 98 first ed that was causing the problem...thanks mike
once again, thanks to all.

204192 2004-01-02 09:20:00 i once had a similar problem with XP when i upgraded my Motherboard, CPU and video card - all at the same time - the mouse and keyboard didnt work at the login screen - it took about 10 minutes for XP to install all the new stuff.... (of course the video card was a different matter) (windows doesnt automatically install the AGP slot)......... agent_24 (4330)
