| 204288 | 2003-12-30 23:11:00 | When starting computer page starting "We apologize for the inconvenience but windows did not start . A recent hardware or software change might have caused this . " (I did no change) . Then it gives option of starting in Safe mode, Last known Config, etc . Start windows Normally is highlighted and I cannot move off this with up/down keys . It then goes to the Windows page for about 15 secs and then this fails to start . After this a new page starts . "STOP: C0000218 (Registry File Failure) The system cannot load the hive (file): \SystemRoot\System32\Config\ Software or its log or alternate . It is corrupt, absent or not writable . Beginning dump of physical memory . " Then it counts down to 100 and starts again at "We apologize . . . . . . . " Hope someone can help . Ken |

| 204291 | 2003-12-30 23:46:00 | When I had this problem it was a faulty stick of RAM. If you have two, try each one on its own in the first RAM slot. Cheers Billy *<8-{) |

| 204292 | 2003-12-31 06:10:00 | I found this problem on a system I built and traced it back to faulty RAM too. I fixed the computer using the steps ( or similar ) found in Jen_C's post. Had the computer running for a couple of days and the same problem cropped up. I ran Memtest86 after that and both RAM sticks had faults in the upper range. Since I replaced the RAM at no cost to the customer it has been used happily ever since. |
