204214 2003-12-30 08:56:00 Greetings all.

I am trying to install a brand new laptop with XP Pro on to a large P2P network covering 20 PCs including Win98SE, NT4 and W2K.

- I can ping other PCs on the network
- Can access the internet through the "mail server (jetstream)"
- The laptop shows on the other PCs' Network places but cannot be
accessed. The laptop can only see itself on the network.
- Workgroup name and IP addresses are correct
- Laptop user name has been set up on PCs
- C Drive and Folders/files are shared

Is there a particular XP-Pro foible I should watch out for ? Anything
else I should be aware of ? Usually takes 5 minutes to install on the
network. This has given me a 6 hour headache !

Thanks folks and a Happy New Year !

Have you set up the PC user names on the laptop? One issue is that to connect to XP you need to be a user on that machine (or a guest - there is a guest account available, which would need activating).

You might like to turn on or off (whichever it isn't now) Simple File Sharing, which can be found in Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > Views, the last option in the scroll-down list is "Use Simple File Sharing"

204216 2003-12-31 21:46:00 Hi Mike, I've double checked everything. Even added Guest and Everyone with Admin rights to the other PCs. Tried turning on/off Simple File sharing. Laptop can ping other PCs, but the other PCs can't ping the laptop. Any other ideas ? This is driving me crazy !

Thanks
CJ

204217 2003-12-31 21:52:00 Greetings Knight,
Im assuming they all have the same Gateway settings, and are all on the same range IP's (eg all on 192.168.0.xyz)?!

When you ping, are you pinging the IP address of the remote PC, or are you pinging the Name of the PC?

Try going to radmin.com and downloading a small app called Advanced IP Scanner.
Run that, as I'd be interested to see what it turns up...

The IP's are static and not DHCP, right?

204218 2003-12-31 22:12:00 Hi Chill,

Yes, all static IPs - running from a hub . Pinging IP addresses from the laptop is okay . When I try to ping the laptop from other PCs, it times out . Laptop can access internet/email through the Linux "mail server" . It just has to be an XP thing (firewall is turned off) . Will download the file you suggest and see what happens .

Thanks

204219 2003-12-31 22:27:00 Go to your DOS type prompt and type in ipconfig and hit enter. One of the settings listed will be "Broadcast" or "Peer to Peer".

If its set to "Broadcast" you need to change it to "peer to peer". You can do this in the registry but unfortunately I cannot remember the key to modify. Maybe someone else can inform us.

204221 2004-01-01 01:33:00 John, strangely enough neither of those showed in ipconfig ! The laptop crashed when I tried to run Advanced IP scanner . In the end since there was not much on the laptop, I used the Recovery disk . That seems to have done the trick and we're on the network :-)

Everyone, thanks for your help . Obviously there was a glitch in the OS/network software .

Cheers

I wouldn't worry too much - I'd never seen those displayed under ipconfig before, so I just went and had a look, and its not on mine either .

Perhaps John might want to elaborate a little on this one?

204223 2004-01-01 01:45:00 Pehaps it simply needed a re-install of tcp/ip?

I havent used XP in a while now, but try:
ipconfig /all

Does that show any additional information?
