204045 2003-12-29 23:47:00 Hi.

I'm going to get a new CD Writer.
I currently have a HP 9100 - 8x 4x 32x.
I've had this for a few years (i paid $300 for it!)

But after seeing my mate burn a cd in a few min's (whereas i take like 20minutes) i thought I'd get a new one as they're dirt cheap.

And no - I don't wanna get a DVD writer (i was thinking about it - but i ended up getting a new HDD).

What I wanna no is what is a good model/maker?
And what are all these special features some have (like burn proof etc - mine doesn't support any of them)

And another thing - how fast should i go - a mate as a really fast one - but it sounds like a plane tasking off (no kidding!)

So if someone could recomend a good cdwriter - with all the features - and a good speed - but not to noisy, that would be great.

Thanks

204046 2003-12-30 00:01:00 I use Aopen 40 12 48 but normally burn at 24 - Has all the features - Just Link & Just Burn, and works fine with Nero. Normally just use it for Data, but audio is fine, tend to burn these a bit slower. Don't think that there are any bad ones on the market these days.

204048 2003-12-30 00:23:00 The Samsung brand do a 8MB variety - but make sure you confirm this, as most are the 2 MB model.

I have a Samsung SW-248B 48x16x48 with the 8 MB buffer. It is very quiet to use and comes with Nero software. There is a faster model available too, but I find this speed is more than suitable for my needs.

204049 2003-12-30 01:43:00 Just Link is a buffer that prevents "under run" I think all CDr's have it - Just Burn optimizes the recording speed - Again, I'm sure that this is standard on most drives. This model has 2mb buffer, but doesn't need any more due to Just Link. Comes with Nero as well. I bought this in July 2002 & no problems at all.

204050 2003-12-30 01:54:00 There have been quite a few threads on this topic which you will find with a search .

I have a Lite-On CD writer that is two years old now and performs very well . Lite-On have a good name, as do AOpen and Asus . Probably the best you can get are Plextors but they also cost more .

Regarding speed, faster is not always better when burning as more errors can occur . Not all older CD readers can read discs burnt at high speeds - it is advisable to burn music CDs at a low speed for this reason . I burn mine at 8x and can play them in all of our CD players, including one that is ten years old .

204054 2004-01-02 11:06:00 if you want a cheap one, that is pretty good - go for cyberdrive - from dick smith electronics - 52x/ 24x /52x with super-link. IDE\atapi for $99, plus you get nero. my CD-ROM, DVD-ROM and CD-RW drive (the one mentioned here) are all cyverdrive and have been working well for a long time. they are pretty cheap too. that particular burner got a score of 8.5 out of 10 or something on a test site. agent_24 (4330)
