204772 2004-01-01 21:37:00 My wife has just bought a LD DVD writer in Singapore and it will be here soon.
I already have a Ricoh CD writer in the computer.
Should I keep the CD writer in there to save wear and tear on the DVD writer?
My kids are always playing games so It runs for quite a bit of time.
I used to always run a CDROM drive and a CD writer together but I found the Communist Chinese drives were dying after a year. So I just stayed with the writer because they got so cheap.
My CD writer is made in Formosa and seem to be of better quality than Communist Chinese stuff.

204774 2004-01-01 21:56:00 I hope you do know that Formosa is not called Formosa anymore - is now called Taiwan, although no countries recognise it as a country yet.

Yes - it would be a good idea to use your CD Writer to save wear and tear on the DVD burner.

204775 2004-01-01 22:47:00 :O When I was at Ngatimoti school we called it Formosa or Nationalist China to differentiate it from Communist china.
Dont care really, the commos only make junk for the Warehouse where everyone gets a bit of @#$%.
I will take your advice and keep the CD writer, should I make the DVD writer slave or Master?

master

also if the cd writer isnt a cdrw/dvd replace it with a drive that is or a dvd-rom. so you can copy dvds without taking a chunk out of your hd. btw you cant copy dvd-videos as they are double layered and dvd-r/+r and their /rw counterparts are single layered

204777 2004-01-01 23:19:00 It probably wouldn't make a great deal of a difference, but personally I'd use the burner as Secondary Master. somebody (208)
204778 2004-01-01 23:44:00 What is secondary master please ?
From searching and reading old PC magazines I thought the jumper could go Master, slave or cable select
To be honest I dont know the arrangment inside my computer at the moment.
It was an insurance job after a lightning strike and only the case is original.
I would expect it would have a cable between the motherboard and the cd writer with another plug onit and this wil plug into my dvd writer
I am not sure how the FDD and HDD is hooked up. is that what you mean by secondary?

thanks tedheath

204779 2004-01-01 23:58:00 It just refers to the second ide cable.

As to how to set your new drive...Set it to work in with whats already installed,If its going on a cable that allready has a device on it then set it to slave.

204780 2004-01-02 00:07:00 Primary Master - Drive set to Master, on the Primary IDE channel (first IDE ribbon cable)
Primary Slave - Drive set to Slave, on the Primary IDE Channel

Secondary Master - Drive set to Master, on Secondary IDE Channel (second IDE cable)
Secondary Slave - Drive set to Slave, on Secondary IDE Channel
somebody (208)
204781 2004-01-02 01:43:00 How do you know which is the Primary and which is the Secondary IDE cable.
How do cables to the FDD and HDD relate to these IDE cables.
Do all computers have primary and secondary cables?
Thanks for the help so far.
