2004-01-01 10:48:00 | I have an AMD Athlon 1.9+ cpu 768 DDR ram a Moltock FX 5200 with 128-bit memory and to play HALO I have to set up the game with the lowest possible options, video, sound and resolution so as to just play it as a single player. The graphic card driver is may of this year and the 40 g hard drive is 80% free, clean and defragged. Any ideas? | BobM (1138) | |
2004-01-01 10:52:00 | I heard that Halo is pretty PC power intensive. I found the following on Google, which gives a list of things to do to get the best out of it. Be warned, it's not a short read. forums.rgaming.net J :D

2004-01-01 11:14:00 | Halo runs fine on my XP1800+ (1.53ghz), 512MB RAM, Geforce 4 MX440 (with SD ram :-() so its gotta be a software or configuration poblem. Have you set up your card in the bios. I think you go into advanced peripherals or something and where it says Graphics aperture size you put in half the size of your systems RAM (i.e. 768/2) and enable the fastwrite stuff etc etc. The VERY latest drivers may help... they increment very fast. The only other thing I can think of is your card type... is it a 5200, 5700 and is it ultra. I was told a while ago that my 64meg card would outdoa fx 5200 (not-ultra) and they had the charts to prove it.

2004-01-02 09:28:00 | Sorry to burst ur bubble...but to be honest the FX 5200 is a seriously weak card for gaming purposes .... in fact it's about the same as a GF4 mx 440 except it has a directX 9 support. To play a game like Halo, which even people with Radeon 9800 Pro complains about the performance you ought to get yourself a new GFX card ; P Obviously it would also depend on how you define the word "smooth" I mean, I have a friend who claims to be able to play Need For Speed Underground on the highest setting on a Geforce 2 MX, while I am complaining on medium setting with a Ti 500. Anyway, I don't mean to depress you with the post.... but you shouldn't expect ur current graphics card to be able to handle new games with a high fps. Laterz!

2004-01-03 08:22:00 | Thanks for the replys.. I checked with Sandra and find that my MOB has only a FSB of 2x133 = 266fsb. Surely this will drag any performance of boards etc down to this level and result in a " lousy gaming result". | BobM (1138) | |
2004-01-03 08:54:00 | I've done quite a bit of reading regarding this issue most pppl have with Halo... it is interesting to not that the performance of the games has quite a bit to do with your hardware setup.... mobo, ram, fsb etc, slow or poor performance is not solely related to your graphics card. As for previous remarks stating that the GeForce FX 5200 is a lousy gmaing graphics card.. i have to say that as an owner of one of these card i disagree. Yes it is a budget card but I wouldn't sell it short by a long shot. Over the last few months I have purchased a variety of games (Call Of Duty, Halo, Magic The Gathering: Battlegrounds) and I haven't had any problems running these games... with the exception of Halo where I had to tweak my system to get a bit of ooomph performance wise, in the end all I did was add an extra stick of DDR Ram to utilise my mobo's dual channel Ram capabilty... I now run Halo at the highest settings and it's a dream to play and watch as well. Game performance is NOT solely related to the type of graphics card you are running, it has to do with your overall system specs and how well you use your resources. It is known that Halo is quite funny, by giving different performance levels on different types of machines, most users found that a bit of tweaking on various things increased or improved the games performance.... it wasn't just the display card they were using. cheers chiefnz
