204597 2004-01-01 01:26:00 I am looking at buying a combination DVD player/VCR to replace a dying VCR. What do I need to look for to enable it to be able to connected to a home cinema system in the future? Does having coaxial or optical audio out mean it will provide 5.1 sound for a home cinema amp? 204598 2004-01-01 02:39:00 hi.
hey - i no it doesn't answer your Q (i'm not to sure on tht) but have you thought about purchasing a dvd recorder instead?

A decent DVD/VCR is $500 right (correct me if i'm wrong) and i think dvd recorders are down below $1000.

And you can do alot more with a dvd recorder than with a VCR - and eventually - dvd rec will take over VCR's anyhow.

I'm not to sure if dvd rec support surround sound speakers however - someone else will have to clear that up.

Yes, you need digital out (ideally both for most flexibility) for the digital in on your amp (for DTS and Dolby Digital). I presume you will have another set of analog outputs for the vhs video side (I presume that the unit won't convert the vhs video sound to digital sound). I've always liked the idea of the combined units although a $300 hifi video and a $200 dvd player would probably provide similar performance.

I actually don't have one myself. I have an old Sony hifi video which cost me almost $700 and and all in one dvd unit (DVD player, 6 channel amplifier, AM/FM tuner, aux in) which performs surprisingly well (I consider myself having slighty expensive tastes in hi-fi too!)
