2004-01-01 00:41:00 | Greetings, Ive been having a hell of a time setting up the Family's PC running Gentoo Linux 1.4, and I dont want this to put me off and put 4 days of Compiling the system to waste.. Im currently in GNOME, after spending the last 30 minutes hacking away at the XF86FConfig file. Normally on my PC, Ive got a working XF86Config file sorted that I can just restore from my backups, this PC is different (Oh help...). Its running Shared VGA, Sis 630 IIRC, but the chipset shouldnt _really_ matter. I basically just need it to run at 1024x768, and have the wheelmouse.... Here's my current XF86Config file: www.josiahspackman.orcon.net.nz ...Its a bit of a mess... I tried booting Knoppix and using the auto-configured XF86Config file from there (It was using the SiS driver too!), but it kept moaning about no Mouse input and no Monitor... :-( Right now Im running 640x480@256 colors.... Ideally, I'd like 1024x768@24bpp I can do the wheelmouse later (Just have to grab two lines from my PC's XF86Config file for the wheel part, its working fine otherwise). Any idea's on where Ive gone wrong? Thanks Chill.

2004-01-01 10:58:00 | Have you tried the xf86config command line tool yet? It should be installed with your x-server. It also pays to know the Horizontal and Vertical sync rate of your monitor when running this tool if you want to get high resolutions without stress. If this doesn't work your xf86config file is one hell of a mess. Trim it down by reading through the associated annotation and adding/deleting bits you don't need. By default the file describes two graphics cards "vesa" and "sis". You only need "sis" so all references to "vesa" can go. Also you only need one description for your monitor so drop all the "Screen" references apart from one. Find out the hsync and vsync of your monitor and enter those into the relevant fields in the file and if possible describe some proper monitor timing settings in the Monitor section like the following: # 640x400 @ 70 Hz, 31.5 kHz hsync Modeline "640x400" 25.175 640 664 760 800 400 409 411 450 # 640x480 @ 60 Hz, 31.5 kHz hsync Modeline "640x480" 25.175 640 664 760 800 480 491 493 525 # 800x600 @ 56 Hz, 35.15 kHz hsync ModeLine "800x600" 36 800 824 896 1024 600 601 603 625 # 1024x768 @ 87 Hz interlaced, 35.5 kHz hsync Modeline "1024x768" 44.9 1024 1048 1208 1264 768 776 784 817 Interlace Also what happens when you try moving through the different monitor settings whilst the XServer is running (crtl + alt + '+' or '-') The XServer should try to get 1024x768 before failing and dropping down to the lower resolution.

2004-01-01 11:11:00 | Yeah, spent a good 20 mins playing with xf86config I know its a major mess.. That's what xf86config genrated I think.. Or was that another one... I lost track. All I know is that the Monitor can do 1024x768 @ 60hz, its not the easiest on the eyes, but its better than 800x600. If I try Ctrl + Alt + _ (or +) it goes down to an even lower res. :-( Any other ideas? Thanks Chill.

2004-01-01 21:36:00 | Chill, Can't suggest much, other than winding back the colour to 8bit at 1024x768 to try and get that res going. Maybe the SiS driver is too generic for your specific video card. Have you tried the Vesa driver at 1024x768 at 8 bit colour? When I got Vector Linux going on my P200, it had a "bright" line down the left hand side of the monitor. When I tried using XFconfig, the bright line disappeared but then I couldn't get 1024x768. I made some changes to the XF86Config file and it just would not go at that resolution. So I took the original XF86Config file and changed some of the monitor settings and managed to get rid of the line at 1024x768. If can be rather frustrating (oops - not supposed to say that am I, us "Linux people" can't be seen to be getting frustrated with our "baby" :D )

Nope, that was what I'd been using in conjunction with my own XF86Config file.... > What make of monitor do you have? Some generic POS that does 1024x768 @ 60Hz, nothing more.... :-( I'll be trying again later on this afternoon and keep you posted :-) Thanks for the suggestions Chill.
