2003-12-31 20:19:00 My computer runs Windows 98 SE. Some time ago it began connecting to the Internet on bootup. At first one click would dispose of this but eventually it took five or more. This problem was solved when my power supply went wrong and corrupted my files necessitating a complete reinstall. However it reappeared soon after. After some sort of problem involving the blue screen of death it went up from one click to two clicks on the cancel button to stop it. I have let it connect but it doesn't actually connected anywhere as such. It is quite happy to connect to my e-mail service or Internet Explorer, I don't think it's the result of someone's actions as the problem has got worse without me connecting to the net at all. I am dreading going back up to six or seven clicks. Any ideas would be most welcome. Bumfluff (3523)
2003-12-31 20:22:00 There is a program somewhere on your computer which is trying to access the net, causing your PC to dial-up. It would be advisable to run AdAware/Spybot to get rid of any spyware which may be doing this. somebody (208)
2003-12-31 20:23:00 You will most likely have installed a program (perhaps several) that have a setting or option to look for updates online. The problem with these programs is that they look for the updates whether you're online or not. If you're not online your computer will offer to connect so that the updates can be found.

In your system tray (bottom right corner of the screen next to the clock) will be several icons of programs running in the background. It'll probably be one of these programs. Open each program and see if you can find a setting somewhere that tells it to look for updates, or something similar.

2004-01-01 00:05:00 Thanks somebody, I have run both spy bot and add aware repeatedly and removed everything that they come up with. It doesn't seem to work. Thanks for taking the trouble though. Bumfluff (3523)
2004-01-01 00:07:00 Thanks Mike, I find that AVG, my antivirus software is set to check for updates every 24 hours. I have removed that and will see what happens. Bumfluff (3523)
