204490 2003-12-31 16:32:00 hi all, Happy New Year.
I have a slight ptoblem, my mother has a pc, and used to teach computing....a very long ti,me ago.
I am now an adult and teach people how to work pc's, run them properly etc. My mother os running ME (yes, I know, get rid of it) well, she won't today, but maybe in a motnth or so.
My problem is this: ME crashed (of course) and she got sick of it and asked me if I could help her out. "Of course....no prob" I replied, not realising that later that night, Xmas Eve, she would try to reinstall ME and totally lose her jetstream config and modem driver (adsl....3 com, I'm led to believe) and the next day I have to reformat, fix all, and install all drivers. Generally, pretty easy. however, I don't have Jetsream and don't have an adsl modem (from 3 com)
The short of it is, 26MD download was wrong driver, the tech who installed it all didn't leave the driver cd, instructions or anything...and she has no idea what comapny came and installed her modem!!!
I would really like to get this sorted by tonight so I can have a peaceful life again............can anyone help me?? (as in drivers location etc)
Pkease remember, I have no idea of the actual model number or anything, as I didn't get to copy down any drivers etc before she tried to fix it all...............p

204491 2003-12-31 17:20:00 Sounds like a tall order without any model ID etc - can you not get her to give you the FCC number? Greg S (201)
204492 2003-12-31 17:23:00 (for others that read this... is it possible in ME to get a MAC ID for components - that might help the mother without her having to go into the box) Greg S (201)
204493 2003-12-31 19:27:00 If she purchased her ADSL package from Telecom, you might be able to ring them and ask them what model/make of modem they put into your mother's PC. Then you can do some searching for the right driver. somebody (208)
204494 2003-12-31 20:31:00 The modem would not have come from telecom as they dont supply that 3com brand so it would have been a computer company that installed the modem. If she can not remember what company supplied modem (how did she pay them, maybe there are payments records, ie chq or credit card) then no point chasing that avenue and also being the hols chances of getting service might have to wait anyway .
I am surprised that they would supply and instal modem without leaving the box and instal cd so check to see that cd is not amongst the rest of her stuff.

You will need to know more details of the modem and then go here (www.3com.com) to find the driver or post details of modem here for others here to find instal info.

good luck

204495 2003-12-31 20:38:00 This site (nzdsl.co.nz/) may help as well. This software (http:) might be what you are after but I would await what others say about it as I am not sure if it is the answer to your dilemma. sam m (517)
204496 2003-12-31 21:03:00 I was under the impression that Aida32 performed a check somewhat like that of lspci in Linux, and might at least be able to give you a Vendor ID.

If she used to teach computers, then hopefully she'll be fine with popping the side of her case off and just looking (no touching needed) at the Modem for ANY number/letter combinations that may be of help (usually 5-6 in length at least).

When I last spoke to telecom, they said they contracted out to a lot of people..? You may need to chase down the person in your area whom they contract out to (If its still the same person). My advice would be leave telecom alone for the time being and just sit tight and be happy with the modem.... Bark at Telecom later if she really must ;-)
