204326 2003-12-31 01:42:00 Not content with trying to rip everyone off with their over priced and low performance Jetstream service, Telecom have now decided that it would be a good time to up the price of the home phone line rentals by 55 cents as of February, nationwide; EXCEPT in those areas where telecom have competition in the home line phone area such as Wellington where the price increase will only be 45 cents (still outrageous) .

I find this very suspicious as it comes right on the heels of the decision from the commerce commission NOT to force telecom to unbundle the local loop, which of course means they won't get the competition we were all hoping they would .

With their local service secure for decades, as it would be too expensive for any other telecommunications company to setup a similar service, telecom once more have a free reign on the local telecom communcations service and have decided to once more demonstarte their monopoly and increase the price for their substandard home phone service .

This decision also comes after telecom posted yet again huge profits in the first quarter and continue to gather more profits each day . For crying out loud will someone please do something about the strangle hold this Monopolising company has over the whole of NZ .

Where they have competition Telecom have had to cut the costs but for 95 percent of the country they have no competition at all and can virtuall do as they please .

So Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from telecom, your present this year is for us to stick it to you by charging you more for our low standard of service and poor quality phone lines, and their aint nothing you can do about it .

204327 2003-12-31 02:46:00 anyone have any idea why the commerce com. made the decsicion they did?
Would be interested to know what the grounds were. At this rate we will all be at Telecoms mercy till the second coming(where was that site I was looking at saying 2004 was the year):p

204328 2003-12-31 04:11:00 Well let me be the the one to say it . . . after reading the related article in the NZ Herald it would appear that the Telecommunications Commissioner, Douglas Webb was obviously bribed, I have been following the whole unbundled loop story for a while now and he was quite adamant that Telecom should unbundle the local loop to allow more competition stating reason after reason the benefits this would have .

Now all of a sudden the primary excuse for the Commission not going through with the decision is that it would be a complicated process to unbundle the local loop . . .

Again let me say had they done it 3 years ago when it was 1st brought up, then Telecom would not have had this problem, in fact it would probably be reaping better rewards from other service providers using it's copper network .

Somehow the phrase, "cutting off your nose to spite your face" comes to mind . It amazes me that Telecom does not see how willing comsumers are to pay that little bit extra for a full speed DSL service alone . They are passing up on a virtual goldmine .

I for one would be happy to pay an extra 10 to 15 dollars even for a full rate broadband service, of course if it was capped the cap would obviuosly have to be a bit higher maybe 15 to 20GB depending what planes they would propose .

Come on Telecom I would gladly give you my money . . if only you would give a decent service . . . . !!!

OMG I'm going to have to pay an extra $6.60 a year! That's outrageous, whatever shall I do??? For goodness sake, they are offering us free local calling - one of very very few countries in the world where this is available. How about they leave off the extra 55c and start charging us for calls?

> substandard home phone service

My phone works fine... what's substandard?

Sure there is. Disconnect your phone and cancel your account. They are a business, not a charity. You buy what they offer. They're not forcing it on you. If you don't want it, don't buy it. If you want an alternative, buy a cellphone.

204330 2003-12-31 11:59:00 i honestly think 55c isnt that bad when in australia they charge 20c per call even if ur ringing the neighbour and that adds up really...

but its really pissed me off coz i dont even use the phone or any telecom services, i only got the line so i can use the internet with a different company, if there was another lines service in nz and cheaper then i'd be first in line (unless i was last to know)..

all we gotta do is put up wif it till someone new comes in and lays their own lines and takes the competition with 2 hands around the throat :-D

telecom HAS to offer free calling, its one of the telecommunications laws in new zealand so they cant charge us for that...

but honestly i thought they would let in some competition, but yeah...

204331 2003-12-31 12:11:00 Wouldn't Woosh be a viable solution, if it's available (or soon to be) in your area?

Aside from the fact that it's $15 a week (another rip off in my opinion, though it's more than Jetstream Starter packages with some ISPs), it would mean you could dump your line hirage from Telecom.

204332 2003-12-31 17:29:00 Depends on your point of view . The ONLY reaon I have a phone line is so i can have access to the interent I DO NOT make any calls anywhere wih my phone line and I Object to having to pay even for a service I do NOT use . Now if all I had to pay was the Jetstream charge and my ISp then I would be happy, But no I have to pay for the stinking phone line on top of the jetstream charge, I can honestly say I have not made one single phone call, local or other wise in the last six months but now I have to pay more . So how is this reasonable and not an abuse of the monoploly they hole over us all .

I am well aware of what they charge in Aussie for local calls and I know we have it somewhat better, but why shoukd I have to pay for a local service I DO NOT use but HAVE TO HAVE in order to access the internet .
Odin (227)
204333 2003-12-31 19:32:00 Well assuming you are using Dial-Up, every time you connect to the internet you're making a "local call", even though you're not talking through the phone. If you're connected for hours on end, then you're technically "talking" for hours on end, using the phone line. somebody (208)

Their increase is in line with inflation . Technically you're not paying anything extra .

I beg to differ . You do not "HAVE TO HAVE" it . You do not have to have the internet either . You have chosen to buy the service (an internet connection) and as such you have chosen to buy the required phone connection . You can choose not to have that connection, and then you wouldn't be stuck with any increases .

If you go to Aussie or wherever you will have to do the same thing there too . You don't get free phone lines to use your internet connection with . Its the same all over the world .

If this is the case then why dont you choose Homeline Economy, that way you will pay about $25 per month + . 20c per local call . Jetstream does not dial out so you will not be charged any extra . From your statements I am assuming that NO ONE makes any calls on your line, local or toll .

HAVE TO HAVE is fairly strong as no one really has to access the internt, there is only about 10% of the world access use the internet (an old statistic I heard about 1 year ago) so I am sure that if you stopped paying for and using it you WONT die .
If you are going to use another country to compare internet access as an example (many people do that here which really annoys me) then move there!! Internet access is only a small part of living in that country and it MAY be better but I cant think of a better place to live than NZ .
