2004-01-04 19:50:00 | Yeah... But people always advertise their "word-numbers" (As telecom calls them) as longer, 7-9 Digits (After the 0800/0508) part. Take Ihug for example: Ihug Helpdesk/accounts etc: 0800 GET IHUG 0800 438 468 will get you them... The "G" on the end does precious little, and the phone will start ringing them as soon as you put in the 3rd 8! :-)

2004-01-04 20:22:00 | Im going to go a bit off topic with this but i think one telecom thread at a time is enough so i won't start another. Xbox's greed for speed disputed www.stuff.co.nz In a nutshell Telecom dispute the recent reports of the cost of using the xbox online then proced to confim that it will infact cost a bundle but state-"It's not about getting as many people as possible to take it up. It's about providing the most enjoyable experience in the gaming world," he says. Ahem,What its about is telecom charging like a wounded bull.

2004-01-04 21:40:00 | yep and ( in regards to the telecom and xbox thing ) how many parents are going to get a nice "suprise" when they find out that their kids have exceeded the 500mb cap for Live!. Then they'll remeber why they needed their credit card to activate Live. But this morning on stuff I noticed a nice new article: stuff.co.nz I want a pay rise boss.... :)

2004-01-04 22:02:00 | I can agree with Metla, that the charges are outrageous! They reakon you can use upto 300MB per hour if you're hosting a 16-person Multiplayer game on Live! You obviosuly dont _have_ to, but say you and 8 mates (We'll half it for the sake of this experiment) get XBox Live, thats 150MB per hour which is technically getting close to maxing out the connection. That's 3 hours you can use it for before you're almost at your cap Lets say Joe Bloggs down the road organises with his mates to do it every friday night for two nights (At 4x weeks per month) then that's 5 hours worth that they're using over-capped... 5 hours x 150MB per hour = 750MB 750MB over cap @ 20c per mb = $150 bill for 8 hours of gaming pleasure... I understand they want to make it the best experience possible, but that's ridiculous! Bearing in mind you dont _have_ to host... Another thing: Why would the recommend you use 256kbps if 128kbps if perfectly playable? Would it not be because you cannot push enough data down the 256kbps pipeline? Therefore if 128kbps cannot push enough data for it to be playable, then surely its going to be using more than the 128kbps constantly...?! Now from my deductions, in Real-World examples, I can get down around 57 meg on average in an hour on 128kbps (This is downloading at night when nobody else _should_ be using the connection coz they're all asleep in the house). So if Live! pumps down more than 50MB an hour (Which doesnt seem too bad) then you get roughly 10 hours before you've broken your 500MB Cap (Which admittedly most Parents go for when they decide to get Adsl because its what the sales rep recommends coz telecom know they make the most off it!). Can I ask if anybody has Live and 128kbps that they can check it out on? Say, note down your current usage, game hard out for two hours, then check your usage meter again...!? Just my 2 cents worth... Chill.

2004-01-04 23:38:00 | What a bunch of whingers (with just a few exception)! Welcome to the world of user-pays. And exactly who else do you think should pay for the hardware, software and human resources that are required to keep the telephone network up and available? All Telcos & ISPs have a huge investment in comms hardware, much of which is regularly made redundant by technology advances. Imagine the number of modems ISPs had to buy everytime technology raised connection speeds through 14.4/28.8/33.6 etc? Jetstream isn't slow, it runs like a scalded cat if you meet the exchange distance and line quality criteria, but all the speed in the world is no help if you are connected to a sub-56K source at the other end. Not only that, but Telecom doesn't guarantee full performance unless you have a two-wire installation, the old three wire system may slow it down. I have had nothing but great service (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) from Telecom and Xtra no matter what the reason to call. If you don't like line charges, go wireless, but be prepared to pay your fair share of the infrastructure installation and inevitable upgrading costs. The investors who provided the capital will want a fair return, as you do when you invest in computer equipment or any other asset. If you want to play, you have to pay, and I am not interested in subsidising anybody else's fun and games. Data caps stop me from having to share your costs. Rant over. :D Cheers Billy 8-{)

Oh I totally agree, but I do feel sympathy to the parents who unknowningly signed up their child for Live! without knowing the true "cost" of it all.... |

2004-01-05 01:16:00 | So do I Chill, not all parents are technologically savvy unfortunately. However, they will only take one hit then they will learn, just like I did when No 1 son discovered video clips on the American NBA website. :( I paid for the extra data used though, I didn't blame Telecom or Xtra, or even the NBA. | 204363 | 2004-01-05 01:43:00 | So if something is discussed in a less then glowing manner then its whinging? And your not paying for other peoples use,or the infranstucture,If you were then costs would be reasnable, what you are paying is their profit. Not to say companies aren't allowed to make profit but rather that if there was competion against telecom then they would have to offer a better deal. User-pays is fine,User reamed by company with monopoly is a different story.

2004-01-05 02:08:00 | okay so no-one bothered to read my link ( that was provided ) about the new payrise for the hardworking head of telecom - Theresa Gattung . a nice wee increase in pay . interesting to note some of the things pointed out in the article in regards to global payscales etc . it's not "x-factor managers" no way, it's just a case off "lucky person in the right place at the right time" . well not for two mill a year!! so we'll stick with the "kiwi share" minimum standard of service, and get our usual dose of "inflation has risen so lets put up our prices" yearly, and yeah we don't winge . . . . :)

2004-01-05 02:18:00 | I had a look at your link, and it is indeed a gross amount of money to pay anyone to go to work. But,They have to find somewhere to put the billions of dollars they fleece from the consumers to pay for their inferstructure....
