204346 2004-01-03 02:31:00 I am with Baldy. When I was living In Renwick in 1980s I had to wait 2 months for a number to come free to connect a phone. That was the dumb NZPO. I have despised the NZPO since. We have come a long way in the level of service since then. Dont forget the past! Telecom have to make a profit so they can invest in the future.
I have one phone line it is used as a fax/phone and internet. I down load heaps of music which I burn to CD, so I have sounds driving around to jobs. For one phone line for around 25 slides per month seems like a good deal to me.
Seems some people would complain if it rained and they were on fire.

204348 2004-01-03 03:21:00 We should all go back to a partyline system. -=JM=- (16)
204349 2004-01-03 03:51:00 My main point is this, I want to access the internet, that is all I want . I appreciate that some people are willing to back up telecom and so you should, fair enough . But remember Not everyone like the same things, I do not like telecom and never will .

Under normal circumstances if I don't particularly like a certain shop, business, company etc then I normally have the free choice to dump them and go to one I do like, or one the offers in my opinion a better service .

However like 95% of the country I DO NOT have that choice when it comes to phone and internet connections (I am not talking about those of you who DO have a choice in the major centers) I only want the internet but I have to Pay for 3 services in order to get ONE, Phone line, ADSL charges and ISP,(and don't say go dial up because on the homeline account at 20 cents per call this costs twice as much as full speed jetsream as Xtra used to keep disconnecting me so I would have to pay another 20 cents to connect again) so in effect I am paying for another service I do not use or want . Now telecom could have easily offered ADSl without making people pay for a home phone line as well (you may well argue this and I'm sure you will, yes telecom are in business to make money, but because they have NO competition they can do what they like) .

As for the increase ok, its only 55 cents, but that is 55 cent on-top of the $1 . 25 cents they increased earlier in 2003 not to mention the 2 increases we in our area have had in the cost of power (which is about an extra $5 . 00 a month and the other increases in accordance with inflation, trouble is my paypacket didn't even go up by 20 cents and as I earn very little all these increases add up .

Now some of you mentioned Australia and what they pay for phone services, yes they are crazy and don't think that for one minute that telecom wouldn't do the same if they could, they actually have a team of high priced lawyers trying to find a loophole in the Kiwi Share agreement that would allow them to do this . As for Aussie well yes they have some ridiculous charges, but If I didn't want a phone line I could still access the Internet using Cable, Wireless and if rich enough satellite 2-way transmission . So you see in Aussie you at least you have a choice, here in NZ you don't except, you either pay telecom their outrageous costs or you go without now what kind of a choice is that . Unfortunately we aren't going to have a choice until the end of 2005 (maybe) when wireless maybe in place until then I have to accept that fact that telecom are in fact ripping me off (My opinion of which I am entitled to, I don't begrudge you your opinion)

I have no intention for this to become a flame war, I am simply and politely voicing my opinion and I appreciate others polite rebuttles or acceptance, please don't get personal .

204350 2004-01-03 04:12:00 I sympathise with your position Odin.

I too was surprised at the about-face from the Commission, it seemed a done deal that unbundling of the local loop would happen.

It seems it will happen for ADSL access but thats all. That leaves the monoploly of providing a path for ADSL with Telecom.

However, one cannot but wonder what would have happened to the TSO (Kiwi Share) requirement of free local calls if the local loop were unbundled. I cannot see how that would continue to be possible, and therefore wonder if this was the underlying reason for the change in position?

Any competitor offerring local loop service would have no restraints under the TSO, leaving Telecom a dwindling market share and the only one that would have to remain a provider of free local calls.

The highlighted part I dont understand . Homeline does not charge 20c per local call .

From your posts you said that you have a phone line that you use for adsl only, ie you dont make any local calls . If this is the case then you should change your line rental to homeline economy ( . telecom . co . nz/content/0,3900,100005-1426,00 . html" target="_blank">www . telecom . co . nz) The cost per month is $25 . 55 . This plan will charge 20c per local call . As you dont make any local calls then you would be saving $13 . 75 per month . As you are on ADSL then this does not generate any local calls because you are not dialling up with ADSL .
There may be a price increase as well on that in the future but you will still be $13 per month better off .

If your intention was to find a solution to this outrageous charge then this is it . If your intention is to air your dislike of Telecom, duly noted .

204352 2004-01-03 04:45:00 One thing to bear in mind:
NZ are behind a large part of the World in the Broadband Dept....
We just are, no matter which way you slice it, we still are.
Admittedly there's got to be a worse-off country out there, but none-the-less.

Now, Telecom _are_ working on their networks so they can provide a better service for us.
How can they go up the size of their networks with no funds?
The Connection fee for one could be used to increase the availability of Broadband, there-by keeping Rural users slightly happier.
It could be used to lay more/fatter cabling so you can get faster connection speeds for less.

There is competition out there, but its young...
Last I heard you could get Cable in Wellington and in Christchurch.
Whoosh Wireless is getting there...

IF your on a wage THAT low, then perhaps you could try buying a budget brand of biscuits once a month, and use the 55 cents you save... Give up anything but the neccesities....

Do you _really_ need to pay the extra $1.50 so you can buy Tip-Top bread over Mr. Big?
Dont get me wrong here, my Father went back to study for 3 years Full-Time, and we didnt take out a loan.. Started with no money towards it either... So dont try and moan to me about "going without" coz I tell you I know what its like!

Where do your Priorities truely lie?

Chill.

204353 2004-01-03 09:05:00 What's Mr. Big?

Just something to think about; usually it's bigger brands that are common all over the country, and localised ones constrained to a specific area. Personally I couldn't care less about what kind of bread I get, and I don't pay special attention to labels, but as far as I can recall, I've never seen Mr. Big bread.

Usually only the bigger brands are delivered nation-wide, so perhaps some people do not have access to cheaper alternatives?

204354 2004-01-04 10:57:00 >number to come free to connect a phone
That was all to do with becomming international where everyone has a seven digit number. Even though a lot of 0800 numbers have more than seven digits it is only the first seven digits that count.
That had more to do with natural progress than the difference between NZPO telecommunication and Telecom
