Usually the Primary cable is the one which plugs into the Blue IDE socket on the motherboard. The IDE cables are the ribbon cables which go to the HDD, CD ROMs etc. The Primary cable usuallly is the 80wire type - when compared to a similar cable going to a CD ROM drive, will appear to have more wires than the 40wire type used for CD Roms etc.

The FDD has a separate cable with a different number of wires, and is not related to the HDD, or IDE devices.

> Do all computers have primary and secondary cables?
All computers will have a Primary and Secondary IDE channel (possibly with the exception of early 08086 PCs made about 10 years ago), but both channels might not have the IDE cables plugged in. In your PC, the HDD is plugged into the Primary IDE cable, and is set to Master. If you have extra HDDs, one may be set to slave and also on the Primary cable. It would be likely that your CD ROM/Writer at the moment are plugged in to the Secondary IDE channel, set to Master/Slave respectively, using a separate cable to the one going into the HDD.

No problem. I'm sorry if my replies have been a bit wordy, but it's the easiest way for me to explain answers.
