2004-01-03 03:22:00 | Right click on the "Internet Explorer" Icon and then click properties. Click on the Tab at the top that saus Connections and click where is says "Never Dial a Connection". This will stop any programs trying to dial out a connection, however when you do connect manually what ever programs were trying to connect before will be able to do so freely unless you use a firewall such as zone alarm that will list each program that is trying to access the net. Hopefully you should be able tyo boot back into windows again and not have any dial up windows popping up. Also go into Control Panel and disable Automatic Updates, that always used to cause me problems, get your MS updates manually don't let windows do it for you it aint smart enough ;-)

2004-01-09 03:09:00 | I wish, the whole thing has got me spooked. It now, suddenly requires nine clicks on the cancel button to stop the blasted thing from connecting. There must be a simple (stress simple) way of finding out what is causing the thing to try to connect every time I turn it on, but it escapes me. Thanks to all who have contributed- Bumfluff | Bumfluff (3523) | |
2004-01-09 03:33:00 | Do you have Windows Media Player installed? That often tries to check to see if updates are required. Download and install a firewall to see what program is wanting to dial out. Try the free version of ZoneAlarm. | tommy (2826) | |
2004-01-09 03:42:00 | One last try - turn off everything which starts ( ctrl-alt-del, and close prog) and restart. (If it dials out then, I'm flummuxed) Bring them back one by one ( tedious rebooting) to see if a culprit emerges. | TonyF (246) | |
2004-01-09 04:18:00 | I think tonyf meant msconfig (typed and entered in the start-run box). maybe? Brain a bit dopey, went and picked up a Motorbike for the son yesterday. 850Kms and 12 Hours later, the body is still catching up. | Pheonix (280) | |

2004-01-09 06:10:00 | Yes I do have Windows media player, and I do have a firewall i.e. tiny personal firewall, but it is silent about this particular outgoing connection. As I said, it seems to connect to nowhere as such just to my ISP. However I will try the one you recommend, presume it is a download. I will Google it - thank you. | Bumfluff (3523) | |
