204927 2004-01-02 18:12:00 I am about to order some upgrade parts.
(1) M/B GA-7N400 Pro 2. According to spec sheets it supports ATA 133.
(2) Seagate Barracuda serial ATA 150. 7,200.

Does this mean the M/B will not support the drive ?
I notice Western Digital Hard drives are also described as ATA 150.
As I said, CONFUSED,
Jack

204928 2004-01-02 20:25:00 uh....Gigabyte GA-7N400 Pro 2 motherboard, Socket 462, nForce2 Ultra 400 chipset, 400MHz FSB, 4xDIMM, Firewire, ATA-133, SATA-150, RAID, LAN, ATX

The sata-150 in the specs indicates it does indeed suport the drive your looking at.

However its always a good idea to contact the store and get them to garentee compatability of the products your ordering if your not sure.

204929 2004-01-03 03:59:00 Yes it will, a friend of mine has that same board, it also support 8 IDE devices as well as the SATA devices and the Firewire and USB devices and drives as well, so you can have hard drives and cd-drom drives litterally coming out your ears.

One thing you will also need though (maybe) is the SATA power converter, these are not always sold with the SATA drive depends on the brand I think.

I must say from what I have seen, that board is a darn good one, thinking baout getting one myself one day, probably when they are out of date and I can afford one :D

204930 2004-01-03 04:05:00 Just re-read your post again and i think I get the impression that you don't know what SATA and ATA are.

SATA is Serial ATA and is the new technolgy for hard drives and cd roms they are capable of much higher data transfer rates than the older ATA IDE drives. They also don't use the 40 or 80 pin IDE cables we all know and love (or hate as the case maybe), but instead use a very narrow and thin cable. The SATA drive is definately the better one to go for especially since they are only a few dollars more than the same IDE equivilant.

204931 2004-01-03 07:41:00 Yes I know what a SATA hard drive is. And the M/B I am getting supports it. I was just confused with tha Sata , ATA 150.
However that has been explained so I'm already to order when the shops open on Monday. :D :D :D

204932 2004-01-03 09:51:00 OK Jack. Having read earlier posts I have this advice. Why I disconnect everthing is so I insert one device or card at a time.

I start with the new motherboard and insert CPU, Heatsink with fan and RAM before it goes in the case. Having put the motherboard in the case I connect the power to motherboard and insert the AGP video card assuming it's not on board. Bear in mind here that no hard drive, CD drives or floppy drive or any other PCI cards are not in the box yet.

Grab all wires from the front of the case and put them on the multipin header. These are wires like speaker and power wires. I normally have a look at where these should be connected and start with speaker, ATX power and reset switch. Plug in Keyboard, Mouse and Montor. Insert power to system box and monitor. Push the power button on the front of the case and this will hopefully give you a BIOS screen, You should just get ONE BEEP from the speaker. Check as you are going with this as the BIOS should recognise the correct CPU and RAM. If not then you may have to check jumpers on the motherboard for the FSB and clock speed.

Motherboards these days are normally set for auto detect 100/133 0r 166/200. You may have to change a jumper. This is where the motherboard manual comes in handy. You will also want to change the time in the BIOS at this time. It is never going to be set for NZ time unless it is second hand.

My next step is to connect the floppy drive and run Memtest. This may have to run overnight to ensure the RAM you have is not faulty.

I just boot off the floppy drive to do this. Before anyone asks yes I do have a version that will boot off a CD. Assuming the Memtest passes then I put the hard drive (s) in and connect the sensor on the header for IDE and power led. If you case has front USB ports I wait until later to plug to M/B

As it boots (still using a floppy) ensure hard drives are mentioned in the bios. etc..... etc.....

Just one thing at a time is my motto.

This is NOT supposed to replace your manual.
