205159 2004-01-03 22:50:00 I am preparing my shopping list for tomorrow and need some help from someone who has done this before.
I am buying an Athlon XP 3000+ cpu. The price list says "boxed with fan"
Would the heat sink be included with this ?? Is this an "extra" I have to buy?
Also a barracuda SATA hard drive. Is the cable included in the price?
I am replacing M/B cpu ram and hard drive. Are there any other items I will need that are not included?
Thanks,
Jack

205160 2004-01-03 23:09:00 The cpu "boxed with fan" does indeed include the heatsink.

All these questions could have been straigtend out with 1 e-mail to the company you are buying off.Ask them about any need cables.

As for other items,My nforce2 board has an extra powe socket that i havent seen on a board before,If your current psu doesn't have one to match it then a new psu will be needed.

And get an anti-static wrist strap.

205161 2004-01-03 23:24:00 The CPU should always be supplied with a heatsink, it is usually the fan that is extra (sometimes) Hoever if it says boxed with fan then it should contain both heatsink and fan. But just ask when you get it.

As for the Hard drive the SATA cable will be supplied with your new motherboard, however the SATA Power Converter cable may not. SATA drives get their power from the same source but use a smaller plug so you need one that will do this. These cables can be sold with the drive, but that depends on the store, alot of places sell them as an extra that you have to buy seperately. They cost about $6.00 to $11.00 depending on the length. It would definately pay to ask if the drive comes with the power converter cable or not.

PS. I envy you , I want one of those boards and drives too :D :D :D

If you are installing the board yourself, then make sure you have an Anti Static Wrist strap and/or Mat. Touch the board only on the edges or use the antistatic bags to hold it while you put it in place.

205162 2004-01-04 00:30:00 Going to disagree with you there Odin.

Cpu's are sold either oem-Just the cpu,no heatsink or fan.
or retail-Cpu,fan,heatsink.

The heatsink/fan is considered 1 unit.

Of course, thats only my experience but i can say ive ever seen a cpu packaged with a heatsink and no fan(discounting cpu's with passive cooling of course)

205163 2004-01-04 02:22:00 Thanks for the replies. I am going to confirm when I place the order. Of course they are away for the holidays at present. Supposed to be back tomorrow. At present I have a 300 w psu. I suppose at the price I maght as well get a 400 watt psu too. Or should I go to 500 w ?

205164 2004-01-04 02:27:00 Odin, I'll advise at completion of job on the results. I can't afford it either. I just happen to have a couple of credit cards. All I've got to do is find the money in the next six weeks. Hate to pay interest. :-( :-( :-(

205166 2004-01-04 03:22:00 300 should be sufficient, but 400w is better. 500w might be overkill.

Getting into credit card debt is not a good thing - save up first, then buy. Cash buying also gets you the "Cash Only Discounts".

205167 2004-01-04 03:24:00 Well....Yes,it should be a good quality unit, however make sure your not paying extra just to have there branding on it.

Having said that,i don't know what the price of one of those are or the range of products that are supplied by whomever you are purchasing through.

But i wouldn't buy one.

205168 2004-01-04 03:28:00 Just found a price for them, quite reasonable, I’d say it would be a good purchase. metla (154)
