204970 2004-01-03 00:13:00 Does anyone have any experience with external hard drives e.g. seagate 160 GB. Do any come with software that allow fast repeated backup of another drive? Can the seagate external hard drive be purchased in NZ anywhere? Can they be transported/moved around without risk of losing data or being damaged.

I own 2 (1 5.25 and 1 2.5) external Hard Disk, both times I brought Hard Drive Cases then installed a Hard drive I already owned inside of the Case. Have a look at
www.ascent.co.nz

All you need to add to this case is a Hard Drive!!

They are very useful, yes they are portable without fear of data lost.
I've had the 5.25 one for 18 months with a 20Gb Drive in it and its never given me any problems, and its used at least 3-4 times a week.

As I haven't purchased a Case/Hard disk combo before I'm not sure what backup software comes with them (but I use Freeware Back4Win 3.6.0.0)

Hope this helps

I have 3 external hardrives , all different brands. Just bought the best value hardrives to go with them that were available at the time, one 2.5 (40 gig) and 2x 3.5 ( 60 and 40 gig)and they have never given any trouble. For portabilty and ease of use the 2.5 drive is hard to beat, self powered by usb cable so need to lug a power brick. Pricier but tiny (fits in a shirt pocket) and more versatile. None came with any backup software but there is plenty of free versions floating around that will do the job.
I have seen cheaper external hardrive enclosures going for as little as 40 bucks, couple that with a 120 gig hardrive or bigger and you have a cheap large capacity portable drive.

Thanks.
