| 204919 | 2004-01-02 17:39:00 | I recently purchased a PC game called Battlefield 1942. One of the features of the game is the option to play on-line. I have never played a game on-line before and have spent several days trying to get into an on-line game. What I would give my kingdom for is some step-by-step instructions on how to get into playing this game on-line. I have run across the term "server" a lot. What is a server? There is a patch available for the game .. "..dedicated server..", but there is an option tab that comes with the game to "launch srever". Do I need to download the patch to play on-line? It's 700 mb and would take me about 8 hrs. to download.The game offers on-line playing through Game Spy. But I end up at a place where I get a message that says "wrong version, do you want to up-date now.." , and if I choose yes, I end up at File Planet at a blank screen. Can anyone help me? | 204920 | 2004-01-02 17:49:00 | I personally don't own Battlefield 1942 but do have vast experience with online gaming which I absolutely love. No doubt you do need to be patched up to the latest to play online otherwise you will have game version/incompatability problems with other online players. BUT, I'm staggered to hear the patch is 700MB!! The game itself can't be too much bigger than that! So I suspect you're trying to download the wrong thing. As you say the game is prompting you to patch when you go online which sounds right, but what its pointing you to doesn't seem right. Gamespy is an online game playing service that allows multi-player gaming via the internet. It can be problematic at times. A server is provided by the likes of Gamespy or (even better) by the game manufacturer to facilitate online gaming. Might I suggest you uninstall game, clean out folder -- likely to be in "C:Program files" (if uninstall feature doesn't remove it) and completely reinstall game paying close attention to any install optrions it gives you re: online components etc. |

| 204921 | 2004-01-02 17:51:00 | Basically you need the patch, it is about 66MB. Once you have that then try again with Gamespy or download The All Seeing Eye, it's a lot better and easier to use. |

But we don't have hi-speed service so that took me several attempts and I ended up with a file that Windows says is not a valid Win 32 application. Anyhow, ... could you give some advice to a novice at this on-line gaming?Good games or good sites, general info, how-to tip's. Any advice would be much apreciated. | WILLWILLWILLWILL (236) | ||

The patch I was trying to download is 143 Mb. and after several tries I got this file Windows says is not a valid Win 32 application. | 204924 | 2004-01-13 14:52:00 | Battlefield does NOT requie a 700Mb patch, at most 150 from what I have seen. Open port 14567 in firewall, go Multiplayer, go Internet, Refresh all lists and try connecting. If you still would have to wait the , stated, 8 hours in order to Download BF, dont bother playing online, your ping will be skyhigh and the gameplay runied...sadly...settle for some LAN instead if so. Download all thats needed from battlefield1942.com and happy gaming! |
