| 204804 | 2004-01-02 00:58:00 | I have the problem that every now and then my cursor freezes , sometimes I have to click repeatedly on buttons/links repeatedly before it works. This can happen with web pages especially ones that have boxes to type text or open options menus and very long web pages, it also happens in text programs such as Microsoft Word, but not when using graphics progs or when the desktop is showing. Sometimes when the cursor freezes it sounds like the hard drive is being accessed (ie grinding away
sorry, whirring away for a long time) before it stops and the cursor moves again. This seems to have started happening since I installed MYIE2 browser, but have just uninstalled and no change. Typing this in Word the blinking line where you type (dont know its name) will move up/down/left/right when using keyboard, but the cursor jumps all over when moving the mouse and cant click to select. The mouse and keyboard are Logitec cordless, new batts and all connected. Usually works great and as I said, no problems using the mouse in things like graphics programs, so think its not a mouse problem. The comp bits are as follows: Win XP pro Athlon XP1600+ 20gig HD 256mb ram Set virtual memory to 383mb (recommended) Also have MYSQL server, but not using (HD light on all the time since installing!) Its driving me nuts, so any suggestions appreciated. PS, tried a system restore but for some reason system restore was unable to complete the restore. |

Run Scandisk on your hard drive, and defragment your hard drive (might take a while). It sounds like there is a program on your PC which is chewing up RAM, causing everything you are doing to be pushed into Virtual Memory - reason why your HDD is whirring away loudly. Did you restart your PC after uninstalling MYIE2? Also, does this problem happen immediately after you boot up your PC, or does it run smoothly for a while before showing these symptoms? |

| 204807 | 2004-01-02 21:56:00 | i had similar things happen to my puter, and worked it back to too many things starting at start up / boot, and also the anti virus prog i was running. but yes run spybot and adaware if you have them and do a virus check as well. defrag and scandisk are good things to routinely do any way, and sometimes take large amount of time to do, so be warned. may pay to check how many things starting at boot up, not always necessary to have every thing to start then. to check Start > run > msconfig > start up tab. may be off here but its a thought. beetle |
